HE FOUND HIS DAUGHTER EATING FROM A DOG BOWL... THEN EXPOSED HIS FIANCÉE IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE CITY
CHAPTER 1: THE DOG BOWL
Marcus Vale thought he had finally found happiness again.
Three years after losing his wife, he believed Cassandra had saved his family.
She was beautiful.
Charming.
Patient.
The kind of woman everyone admired.
She volunteered at children's charities.
She smiled for magazine covers.
She remembered birthdays.
And most importantly...
She seemed to love his eight-year-old daughter, Lily.
At least that's what Marcus thought.
But over the last few months, something had changed.
Lily stopped laughing.
Stopped drawing colorful pictures.
Stopped running into his arms when he came home.
Instead, she grew quiet.
Nervous.
Almost afraid.
Whenever Marcus asked what was wrong, she gave the same answer.
"I'm okay, Daddy."
But she wasn't.
And deep down, Marcus knew it.
One evening, he found a drawing hidden under Lily's bed.
Most children drew princesses.
Puppies.
Rainbows.
Lily had drawn a little girl sitting alone in a dark room.
Crying.
Standing over her was a woman with a giant smile.
Marcus stared at the picture for a long time.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
So he did something he never thought he'd do.
He installed security cameras throughout the mansion.
Not because he suspected Cassandra.
Because he needed answers.
For nearly three weeks, the cameras showed nothing unusual.
Cassandra looked perfect.
Every day.
Every hour.
Every room.
The perfect fiancée.
The perfect future stepmother.
Marcus almost removed the cameras.
Almost.
Then Thursday night happened.
He was sitting inside a board meeting in New York when his phone vibrated.
Motion detected.
Kitchen camera.
Without thinking, Marcus opened the live feed.
At first, he didn't understand what he was seeing.
Then his blood turned to ice.
The kitchen lights were dim.
The marble floor gleamed beneath the chandeliers.
And there, in the center of the room...
Was Lily.
On her knees.
Crying.
A stainless-steel dog bowl sat in front of her.
Marcus leaned forward.
His heart began pounding.
"No..."
The executives around him continued discussing contracts.
Profits.
Investments.
Marcus heard none of it.
Because Lily looked terrified.
Then someone stepped into view.
Cassandra.
She wasn't smiling the way she smiled in public.
This smile was different.
Cold.
Cruel.
The kind of smile people wear when nobody is watching.
Lily shook her head.
"Please..."
Her tiny voice broke.
"I don't want to."
Cassandra crossed her arms.
The diamond engagement ring Marcus had given her sparkled under the kitchen lights.
"Eat it."
Lily began sobbing harder.
"Please, Cassandra."
"Eat."
Marcus stood so fast his chair nearly tipped over.
Several board members looked up.
"Marcus?"
He ignored them.
His eyes remained fixed on the screen.
Lily looked down at the bowl.
Dog food.
There was dog food inside.
Marcus felt sick.
Then Cassandra crouched beside the little girl.
Close enough for the camera microphone to catch every word.
"Do you know why your daddy doesn't spend time with you?"
Lily wiped her eyes.
Confused.
Cassandra smiled.
Because he finally has someone worth loving.
Marcus froze.
The room around him disappeared.
His daughter's face crumpled.
The little girl looked completely shattered.
Then Cassandra leaned closer.
And whispered something that made Marcus walk out of the meeting without a single word.
Something that guaranteed she would never become his wife.
"You're just the mistake he feels guilty about."
The feed ended.
Marcus grabbed his car keys.
And for the first time in years...
The billionaire wasn't thinking about business.
He wasn't thinking about money.
He wasn't thinking about consequences.
He was thinking about one thing.
Getting home.
Before he did something he might regret.
