Chapter 4 â The Empire Begins to Fall

Chapter 4 â The Empire Begins to Fall
The hospital room exploded into motion.
Three federal agents rushed through the door.
âFederal agents! Nobody move!â
Ethan spun around.
One of the men beside him instinctively reached inside his jacket.
âHands where we can see them!â an agent shouted.
The man froze.
Claire remained perfectly still in the hospital bed.
Daniel's voice was still coming through the phone beneath the blanket.
âI've been recording since the call began,â he said calmly.
An agent picked up the phone.
âMr. Shaw?â
âYes.â
âDo you have a secure copy?â
âThree copies.â
âGood.â
Ethan stared at Claire.
âYou planned this.â
She met his eyes.
âNo.â
âI finally stopped protecting you.â
The lead agent stepped forward.
âMr. Ethan Caldwell, you're being detained pending investigation for witness intimidation and obstruction.â
âThis is ridiculous,â Ethan snapped.
âYou have no evidence.â
The agent held up the phone.
âWe'll let a judge decide that.â
As officers escorted Ethan into the hallway, he looked back one last time.
âClaire... don't do this.â
She answered without raising her voice.
âYou already did.â
Less than an hour later...
Federal investigators arrived at Caldwell Development's headquarters.
Employees watched from the lobby as agents carried boxes of financial records, computers, and hard drives out of the executive offices.
Television helicopters circled overhead.
News alerts lit up every phone in the city.
Federal Investigation Targets Caldwell Development.
Construction Giant Accused of Massive Financial Fraud.
Margaret Caldwell watched the live coverage from her attorney's office.
âThis is impossible,â she whispered.
Her lawyer looked up from the warrant.
âNo.â
âIt was inevitable.â
She glared at him.
âYou're supposed to defend me.â
âI am.â
âBut I can't make evidence disappear.â
Margaret grabbed her purse.
âI need to speak with Ethan.â
âYou can't.â
âWhy not?â
âHe's being questioned.â
Her face hardened.
âHe won't survive without me.â
The lawyer quietly replied,
âI think he's beginning to realize you're the one who won't survive without him.â
That evening...
Claire finally left the hospital.
Her father helped her into the car.
Her younger sister, Olivia, hugged her carefully.
âYou don't have to do this alone anymore.â
Claire nodded.
âI know.â
As they drove away, her phone rang.
Daniel.
âThey searched Margaret's private office.â
âAnd?â
âThey found another safe.â
Claire held her breath.
âWhat was inside?â
âCash.â
âHow much?â
âNearly three million dollars.â
She wasn't surprised.
âThere was something else.â
âWhat?â
Daniel hesitated.
âA birth certificate.â
Claire frowned.
âWhose?â
âThere isn't a child's name.â
âThere is only one word written across the top.â
âWhat word?â
Daniel swallowed.
âReplacement.â
The line went silent.
Claire felt a chill run through her body.
âDaniel...â
May you like
âI don't know what it means.â
âBut I think your daughter wasn't the only secret Margaret buried.â
