Chapter 8 - The Earlier Report

I slept badly. By morning, June made me breakfast and sat beside me until Lila called. Dana joined us. I put the call on speaker. Lila said the earlier passenger’s seat had been valid. Imani had asked for it to be checked after Rachel questioned him, and the gate agent confirmed it. Imani had filed a report afterward. “The report was closed as a seating misunderstanding,” Lila said. “Our review found it should have received further attention.”

“What did Rachel say about my flight?” I asked. “She acknowledged that she did not verify your boarding pass before directing you to move. She also acknowledged that there was no conflicting assignment for your seat.” The investigation had identified failures both in Rachel’s conduct and in how the earlier report had been handled. “Will the earlier passenger be contacted?” “We have found his contact information. We’re reaching out to him.”

Two days later, David called. He had given his witness statement. The passenger from the earlier flight contacted me through Lila a week later. His name was Mr. Alvarez. He was seventy-one and had been traveling to his daughter’s wedding. “I wondered if I’d imagined her tone,” he said. “I told my daughter it was a mix-up.” “You showed her a valid pass?” “Yes. I felt embarrassed for holding up the aisle.” “I know how that feels.”

At the end of the week, the airline sent me a letter. It confirmed that my seat had been correctly assigned and that Rachel’s direction to move had no basis in the booking records. It apologized for her treatment of me. The airline said it had reopened the earlier crew report, contacted Mr. Alvarez, and changed how similar reports would be reviewed. I read the letter at the kitchen table. Marcus waited across from me. “They put it in writing,” I said.

The next morning, Lila called again. “Rachel has asked whether she may apologize to you directly,” she said. I looked out the window at Zoe and Dana carrying boxes to the car. “I need to think about it,” I replied.
