Chapter 2 - The Verification

Marcus asked Rachel to give him a moment. Then he knelt beside my seat. “Mom, tell me what happened.” I showed him the pass. He checked the name, flight number, and seat. The second attendant, Denise, said she could verify the seat on the cabin list. “Please do,” Marcus replied. “And ask the gate agent to check it against the reservation.”

He stood and faced the aisle. “Boarding can continue,” he said. “Ms. Carter is seated in her assigned seat.” Rachel approached again. “I was trying to avoid a seating conflict,” she told Marcus. “Was there another passenger assigned to 2A?” “I thought there might be.” “Had you checked?” She didn’t answer.

Denise returned with the cabin list. My name was beside 2A. A gate agent confirmed the reservation a minute later. Marcus had bought it three weeks earlier. There had been no change. I heard Rachel say, “I’m sorry for the confusion.” She was looking at Marcus. I waited for her to turn toward me. She didn’t.

Marcus noticed. “Mom, would you like me to stay?” “No,” I said. “Go do your work.” He touched my shoulder. “I’ll see you in Chicago.” He returned to the cockpit. Denise asked Rachel to come with her to the galley. Boarding resumed around me.

Denise came back and told me my seat was confirmed. She asked whether I needed anything. “Could I have some water?” When she handed me the glass, her voice softened. “I should have checked the pass when I first came over. I’m sorry.” The man across the aisle introduced himself as David Price. He had recorded part of the exchange. “Please don’t post it,” I told him. “I won’t. I can send it to you if you want a copy.”

The gate agent came to my seat. “Ms. Carter, your ticket is valid,” she said. “We apologize for the delay.” When the cabin door closed, Denise made the safety announcement. Rachel remained in the galley. The engines started. We moved away from the gate. As the plane turned toward the runway, my phone lit up with a message from my granddaughter Zoe. ARE YOU ON DAD’S PLANE? I typed back. YES. I’M IN MY SEAT.

The plane lifted through the clouds. A few minutes later, Denise crouched beside me. “The captain asked me to make sure you’re comfortable,” she said. “He also asked me to tell you he’s focused on the flight.” I gave a small laugh through tears. “That sounds like my son.” Denise smiled. “When we land, someone from the airline’s customer-care team would like to speak with you. It’s your choice.” “I’ll speak with them,” I said. “But first, I want to speak with Marcus.”
