Chapter 15 - The Man Who Stood Up

Nico grabbed the photograph before the wind could carry it under the dock.

Lorenzo was in it.

No doubt.

His brother stood beside Salvatore’s hidden wheelchair.

Victor stood on the other side.

Edna sat in front.

Date stamp.

Six months before the crash.

Lorenzo arrived at the boathouse door behind Marco.

He saw the photograph.

Stopped.

Nico held it up.

“Explain.”

Lorenzo’s face changed.

“Not here.”

Nico laughed.

“Everybody says that right before the truth gets worse.”

Adeline untied Wes.

He threw his arms around her.

She held him hard.

Edna pressed one hand to her bleeding shoulder.

“Lorenzo found Salvatore before Victor knew.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Stop.”

“No.”

She turned to Nico.

“Your brother was trying to get your father out.”

Nico looked at Lorenzo.

“You said you found him years later.”

“I lied about the date.”

“Why?”

“Because Father told me to.”

Nico’s mouth tightened.

Edna continued.

“Salvatore discovered Victor had been using his identity. He planned to expose him.”

“So why didn’t he?”

“Because Victor had proof of crimes Salvatore committed before he disappeared.”

Nico almost smiled.

“Of course.”

“Your father wanted you clean enough to survive what came next.”

“Clean.”

Nico looked at the gun in his hand.

The boathouse.

The wounded housekeeper.

The family.

“Wrong son.”

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“He wanted you out.”

“Out?”

“Of all of it.”

Nico stared.

“The crash was supposed to stop the Russo meeting and push you toward the legitimate companies.”

Adeline said, “And Victor turned it into attempted murder.”

“Yes.”

Nico looked at Lorenzo.

“You gave them access.”

“To disable the car.”

“You gave Victor the door.”

“I know.”

“You ran after.”

“I know.”

“You let me spend eight months thinking my body was dead because Victor needed me dependent.”

“I didn’t know about the medication.”

“You knew enough.”

Lorenzo looked away.

Nico rolled to the old workbench.

He gripped the edge.

Adeline saw what he was doing.

“Nico.”

He ignored her.

His arms locked.

His legs trembled.

He pushed.

The chair rolled backward.

Marco caught it.

Nico rose.

Slow.

Ugly.

Unstable.

Alive.

His right knee shook.

His left leg barely held.

Adeline moved close but did not touch him.

He stood for four seconds.

Five.

Then leaned against the bench.

Lorenzo stared.

Nico said, “You all built plans around what I couldn’t do.”

Nobody answered.

He lowered himself back into the chair.

Outside, police sirens finally approached.

Victor’s confession, Mara’s files, Cole’s falsified records, Edna’s archive, and the controller data were enough.

Victor was indicted.

Cole lost his license and faced federal charges.

Camille testified.

The wedding never happened.

Wes recovered from surgery.

Mara entered protection.

Edna survived.

Nico’s rehabilitation restarted under independent doctors.

Some days he stood.

Some days he could not.

No one called the bad days failure.

Six weeks later, Marco Ruiz brought the final recovered controller log into Nico’s study.

Adeline was there.

So was Lorenzo.

Nico opened it.

Two brake-system commands.

First:

SALVATORE MASTER ACCESS — VEHICLE DISABLE.

Second:

VICTOR ALFIERI — BRAKE PRESSURE OVERRIDE.

Then a third line appeared below them.

Not a command.

A monitoring authorization.

Someone had been watching both instructions happen in real time.

Nico’s fingers tightened.

Adeline read the account.

LORENZO ALFIERI.

She looked up.

Lorenzo did not move.

Nico said, “You watched.”

Lorenzo’s jaw flexed.

“I tried to stop it.”

“The log says you stayed connected for eleven minutes.”

“I was locked out.”

“Eleven minutes.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“Nico—”

“Did you know Victor changed the command before I hit the bridge?”

Silence.

Adeline’s pulse quickened.

Lorenzo looked at the floor.

That was enough.

Nico’s face emptied.

“You knew.”

“I knew something changed.”

“When?”

“Thirty seconds before impact.”

Adeline stared.

“You could have called him.”

“I did.”

Nico grabbed his phone.

Old call logs.

Nothing.

Lorenzo whispered:

“Not your phone.”

Nico looked up.

Lorenzo’s eyes moved toward the desk.

Toward the old black landline Salvatore had used for encrypted family calls.

Nico opened the archived system.

One incoming call.

Thirty-two seconds before the crash.

Source:

LORENZO.

Status:

BLOCKED BY ADMINISTRATOR.

Nico’s eyes narrowed.

“Who blocked it?”

Marco opened the administrator record.

The screen loaded.

Adeline felt the room tighten.

A name appeared.

Not Victor.

Not Edna.

Not Cole.

Camille Ashcroft.

Nico stared.

Lorenzo whispered:

“She knew before the bridge.”

From the hallway came the soft click of heels.

Adeline turned.

Camille stood in the doorway.

She was supposed to be under federal protection in another state.

She smiled at Nico.

May you like

Then lifted a sealed envelope.

“You finally found the part Victor never knew.”
