Chapter 11 - Camille Knew

Adeline did not move.

Victor’s pistol stayed level.

Nico rolled between them.

“Move,” Adeline said.

“No.”

Victor laughed.

“Still playing the protector.”

Nico’s eyes stayed on him.

“You targeted her before she worked here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor glanced at Mara.

“Because the third nurse became inconvenient.”

Mara’s jaw tightened.

“I found your medication switch.”

“You found part of it.”

Victor looked at Adeline.

“Mara chose you.”

Adeline blinked.

“What?”

Mara said nothing.

Victor smiled.

“She researched you. Nurse. No criminal ties. Desperate dependent. Easy to motivate.”

Adeline turned toward Mara.

“My brother.”

Mara’s face tightened.

“I needed someone who would take the job.”

“You used him.”

“I used the truth. You needed coverage.”

Adeline stared.

Victor laughed.

“Everybody in this room uses everybody.”

Nico said, “Untie Camille.”

Victor ignored him.

The burning SUV cracked behind them.

A tire exploded.

Victor flinched.

Marco Ruiz fired.

The pistol flew from Victor’s hand.

Camille threw herself sideways.

Adeline ran.

Victor grabbed her ankle.

She hit concrete.

Nico rammed the wheelchair into Victor’s shoulder.

Hard.

Victor went down.

Marco reached them.

Two security men followed.

Victor was pinned.

Camille’s wrists were cut free.

Nico rolled close.

“Talk.”

Victor spat blood.

“No.”

Nico looked at Mara.

She held up her phone.

“Already recording.”

Victor laughed.

“You think a recording saves your company?”

“It saves the truth.”

“No. Truth is only useful if someone powerful wants it.”

Nico leaned forward.

“I do.”

Victor’s smile faded.

He confessed in pieces.

The brake sabotage.

The altered medical file.

The drug substitution.

The competency petition.

Camille’s staged provocations.

Not because he felt guilty.

Because he thought he could still justify it.

“You were weak after the crash.”

“I was injured.”

“You were a liability.”

“I was alive.”

“You should not have been.”

Camille shut her eyes.

Adeline saw Nico absorb the sentence.

Then Victor said:

“Your father understood succession.”

Nico’s face changed.

Victor went on.

“If you die, the trust fractures. If you live but cannot lead, control consolidates.”

“To you.”

“To the family.”

“To you.”

Victor smiled.

“Same thing.”

Police sirens approached.

Nico looked toward the burning SUV.

“Evidence.”

Mara said, “Not all of it.”

She held up a small black module.

“I pulled the secondary brake controller before the fire spread.”

Victor’s face finally broke.

Adeline saw it.

Fear.

Marco took the module.

Victor lunged.

Security forced him down.

Nico watched.

Then slowly gripped the warehouse workbench.

Adeline turned.

“No.”

He ignored her.

His hands tightened.

He pushed.

His shoulders rose.

His hips followed.

His right knee locked.

Then his left.

For one impossible second, Nico stood.

Not straight.

Not without support.

But standing.

Victor stared.

Camille covered her mouth.

Mara whispered, “Jesus.”

Nico looked down at Victor.

“You built your whole plan around me never doing this.”

Victor’s face emptied.

Police entered.

They took him.

Camille agreed to testify.

The hearing collapsed.

The engagement ended before sunrise.

Three weeks later, Wes went into surgery.

Adeline sat in the hospital waiting room with Nico beside her.

He had progressed to standing with braces and parallel bars.

No promises.

No miracles.

Work.

The surgery lasted four hours.

The surgeon came out smiling.

Adeline cried for the first time in months.

Nico looked away to give her privacy.

She hit his shoulder.

“Don’t.”

He looked back.

She laughed through tears.

Then Marco Ruiz called.

Nico answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then:

“Send it.”

A file arrived.

Recovered crash-controller data.

Two remote authorization accounts.

One belonged to Victor.

The second belonged to someone else.

Nico opened the name.

His fingers tightened.

Adeline leaned closer.

“Who is it?”

A voice answered from the waiting-room doorway.

“Me.”

Nico froze.

A man stood there in a dark coat.

Older than Nico.

Same eyes.

Same mouth.

A scar across one eyebrow.

Nico whispered:

“Lorenzo.”

May you like

His brother smiled.

“Uncle Victor always did take credit for other people’s ideas.”
