CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO SMILED AT THE FUNERAL

Eric arrived at the hospital surrounded by lawyers.

He wore a tailored navy suit.

Carried flowers.

And smiled sadly for every television camera outside.

"My wife means everything to me."

Detective Mason stepped forward.

"Mr. Reynolds..."

"We have a warrant."

Eric didn't panic.

"You'll find nothing."

The detective smiled.

"We already did."

Inside the interrogation room, Eric denied everything.

Until Noah asked one question.

"Daddy..."

"Why did you tell me Mommy would never wake up?"

Eric froze.

The room fell silent.

Detective Mason slowly placed the life insurance policy on the table.

Then the GPS records.

Then security footage from a gas station.

Eric dragging Sophie into his SUV the night she disappeared.

His smile vanished.

For the first time.

Three months later, Eric was convicted of aggravated domestic assault, unlawful imprisonment, child endangerment, insurance fraud, and attempted murder.

His business partners abandoned him.

His board removed him as CEO.

His fortune disappeared in lawsuits.

The mansion where Sophie had lived in fear became a rehabilitation center for survivors of domestic abuse.

On opening day, reporters asked Sophie what finally gave her the courage to escape.

She looked at Noah.

Then at me.

"I realized..."

"If my son grew up believing this was love..."

"I would lose him long before I lost my life."

She squeezed my hand.

"So I chose to survive."

Not because she stopped being afraid.

May you like

But because someone was finally waiting for her on the other side of that fear.
