Chapter 8 - The Warehouse

The location led Daniel to an abandoned warehouse near the river.

No streetlights.

No traffic.

Just broken windows and rusted metal.

Daniel parked two blocks away.

He entered through a side door.

“Ethan?”

Nothing.

Then a light snapped on.

Ethan sat tied to a chair in the middle of the warehouse.

Brenner stood behind him.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Let him go.”

Brenner smiled.

“You came.”

“You sound surprised.”

“I’m surprised you’re still stupid enough to care about people.”

Daniel kept moving.

“Where’s Shaw?”

Brenner’s smile disappeared.

“So you figured that part out.”

“Not hard.”

“Michael Cole figured it out too.”

Ethan struggled against the ropes.

“You killed him!”

Brenner looked down.

“No, kid.”

Then back at Daniel.

“I didn’t.”

Daniel stopped.

“Who did?”

A voice came from the darkness.

“I did.”

Daniel knew it instantly.

He hadn’t heard that voice in five years.

But some voices never leave you.

Victor Shaw stepped into the light.

Older now.

Gray at the temples.

Same cold eyes.

Daniel stared at him.

“You told me Michael was dead.”

“He was supposed to be.”

Ethan looked confused.

Daniel wasn’t.

Everything inside him was burning.

“What did Michael find?”

Shaw smiled.

“Still asking the wrong question.”

“What’s the right one?”

“Why did he spend five years looking for you?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

Shaw walked closer.

“Michael discovered something after the mission. Something he buried because he thought it would protect you.”

“What?”

“A ledger.”

Brenner placed a hand on Ethan’s shoulder.

Shaw continued.

“Names. Payments. Police. Contractors. Judges. Politicians.”

Daniel stared at him.

“And you?”

Shaw smiled.

“Right near the top.”

Daniel lunged.

A red laser dot appeared on Ethan’s chest.

Daniel stopped instantly.

Shaw smiled wider.

“There he is.”

Daniel’s fists clenched.

“What do you want?”

“The key.”

“I don’t have it.”

“No.”

Shaw looked at Ethan.

“He does.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

Shaw walked toward him.

“Your father gave you something before he died.”

“No!”

Daniel saw Ethan’s hand move toward his neck.

A cheap metal dog tag hung beneath his shirt.

Shaw saw it too.

And smiled.

“There it is.”
