Chapter 16 - The Man Above Shaw

Senator Thomas Caldwell was everywhere.

Television.

Billboards.

Charity dinners.

Crime-reduction speeches.

A smiling family man promising to “take Chicago back.”

Daniel stared at Brenner.

“You expect us to believe Caldwell runs this?”

“I don’t care what you believe.”

Brenner pulled a flash drive from his pocket.

“This proves it.”

Michael reached for it.

Daniel stopped him.

“Why bring it here?”

“Because Shaw killed two cops tonight.”

Brenner’s face looked older now.

“He’ll kill me before sunrise.”

Carol crossed her arms.

“That’s supposed to make us feel sorry for you?”

“No.”

Brenner looked at Ethan.

“I don’t deserve that.”

Ethan stared back.

“You were at my house.”

“Yes.”

“You watched them hurt my dad.”

Brenner swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

No one moved.

Brenner’s eyes dropped.

“Because I was a coward.”

Ethan’s face tightened.

“That’s not a reason.”

“No.”

Brenner nodded.

“It isn’t.”

Daniel took the drive.

“What’s on it?”

“Payments. Audio. Internal police reports.”

“Enough to arrest Caldwell?”

Brenner laughed bitterly.

“Enough to make half the city pretend they never knew him.”

Michael plugged it into a laptop.

Files appeared.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Daniel saw his own name.

Michael clicked.

A video opened.

Old security footage.

Five years earlier.

Daniel entered a conference room.

Victor Shaw followed.

Then Senator Caldwell.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I don’t remember this.”

Michael increased the volume.

Caldwell’s recorded voice filled the room.

“We need Hayes to sign.”

Shaw replied:

“He won’t if he knows.”

“So don’t let him know.”

Daniel felt something cold move through him.

The video continued.

Another man entered.

Daniel recognized him.

His younger brother, Luke.

Dead for four years.

Daniel stood so fast the chair fell backward.

“No.”

On-screen, Luke handed Caldwell a folder.

Caldwell smiled.

“You’ve done well.”

Daniel couldn’t breathe.

His brother had worked for them.

Michael whispered:

“Daniel…”

Then Luke said something that turned Daniel’s blood to ice.

“When do we get rid of my brother?”

The room went silent.

And Daniel finally understood why his last mission had failed.

His own brother had helped set him up.
