Chapter 4 — The Woman He Should Have Protected Sooner

That evening...

Emily sat quietly on the back porch.

Watching the sunset.

Ethan wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

"I'm sorry."

She looked surprised.

"For what?"

"For not seeing it sooner."

She smiled sadly.

"I didn't want to come between you and your family."

He gently took both of her hands.

The cuts were healing.

But he knew some wounds were deeper.

"You never came between us."

"They did."

Tears filled Emily's eyes.

"I kept thinking..."

"If I tried harder..."

"They'd finally accept me."

Ethan kissed her forehead.

"You never had to earn a place in this family."

"You already were my family."

Two weeks later...

Emily gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

No hospital visitors were allowed except Ethan.

Not because of hospital policy.

Because Ethan made that decision.

His mother sent flowers.

They were returned.

She wrote letters.

They were never opened.

One afternoon she stood outside their home.

Waiting.

Ethan stepped onto the porch alone.

"Can I see my granddaughter?"

He shook his head.

"When you made my pregnant wife cry while you drank wine..."

"You gave up that privilege."

She began to cry.

"Ethan..."

"I've changed."

He looked toward the nursery window where Emily was rocking their daughter.

Then back at his mother.

"I hope you have."

"But my first responsibility isn't being a good son."

He smiled softly.

"It's being a good husband..."

"...and a good father."

He closed the front door.

Locked it.

Then walked back to the family that had always deserved his protection.

Because love isn't proven by grand speeches.

Sometimes...

It's as simple as saying,

May you like

"Enough."

And meaning it.
