Chapter 1 — "She's Fine... Make Her Finish the Dishes."

The porcelain plate slipped from Emily's trembling hands.
It shattered across the kitchen floor.
For one terrifying second...
No one moved.
Then laughter filled the room.
"Oh, look at that," one of the women chuckled as she swirled her wine. "Pregnancy really does make people useless."
Emily lowered her eyes.
"I'm... I'm sorry."
She slowly bent down despite the sharp pain shooting through her lower back.
At eight months pregnant, even kneeling made it hard to breathe.
Her swollen feet throbbed.
Her baby kicked hard beneath her apron.
Still...
She picked up every broken piece with shaking hands.
Behind her, three women lounged comfortably on the cream-colored sectional sofa.
They were dressed for an evening gala.
Black designer gowns.
Diamond earrings.
Perfect makeup.
Each held a glass of expensive red wine while Emily stood barefoot in the kitchen, washing the mountain of dishes they had left behind.
Vanessa...
Her husband's older sister.
Claire...
His cousin.
And Evelyn...
His mother.
"This kitchen is filthy," Evelyn said without even looking up from her phone.
"Emily, wipe the counters again."
Emily swallowed.
"I already cleaned them."
Vanessa smirked.
"Then clean them better."
Claire laughed.
"Maybe if she'd spent less time getting pregnant and more time learning to keep a house..."
The three women burst into laughter.
Emily forced a small smile.
"Okay."
She reached for the sponge again.
A sharp cramp tightened across her stomach.
She grabbed the edge of the sink until it passed.
No one asked if she was okay.
No one offered to help.
Instead, Evelyn took another sip of wine.
"When I was pregnant," she said proudly, "I cooked for twelve people every Sunday."
Vanessa nodded dramatically.
"Women today are just lazy."
Emily quietly wiped away a tear before anyone noticed.
She only had one more hour.
One more hour until Ethan came home.
He had been away for two days negotiating a major business contract.
She hadn't told him what had been happening.
Not once.
Because every time she tried...
His mother always apologized afterward.
"It won't happen again."
Except...
It always did.
Outside...
Headlights swept across the front windows.
A car door slammed.
Emily's heart skipped.
"Ethan's home."
Vanessa immediately stood.
"Remember."
She pointed toward Emily.
"Not one word."
Emily nodded weakly.
"I won't say anything."
The front door opened.
"Ems?"
Ethan called with a tired smile.
"I'm home."
Emily hurried to meet him despite the pain.
She wrapped her arms around him carefully.
"Welcome home."
He kissed her forehead.
"How's my favorite girl?"
She smiled.
"I'm okay."
Then his eyes dropped.
To her hands.
Red.
Raw.
Covered in tiny cuts from broken porcelain.
His smile disappeared.
"What happened?"
Emily instinctively hid them behind her back.
"It was nothing."
Before she could say another word—
Claire laughed from the living room.
"She dropped half the dinner plates."
The room went silent.
Ethan slowly looked past his wife.
Three women.
Comfortably drinking wine.
His eight-month-pregnant wife...
Still wearing a wet apron.
Still standing barefoot on the cold kitchen floor.
Something inside him snapped.
He looked back at Emily.
One question.
Quiet.
Dangerously calm.
"Emily..."
"Who washed all these dishes?"
She hesitated.
That was answer enough.
He turned toward the living room.
His voice echoed through the house.
"Enough."
Every conversation stopped.
Every smile disappeared.
Then Ethan pointed toward the front door.
"All three of you."
"Get out."
The wine glasses froze halfway to their lips.
May you like
Because for the first time...
He had finally seen everything.
