Chapter 9: The Confrontation at the Desk

The massive corporate gala inside the grand lobby of the Grand Regent was underway when the silver compliance vehicles silently occupied the turn-around lane outside.
Patricia and Karla stood frozen behind the polished marble check-in station, their severe employee postures fracturing completely as two plainclothes detectives closed the perimeter. Behind them, the regional director, Richard, was intercepted near the service corridor elevator, his executive security pass completely failing to clear the gate terminal.
I stepped into the lobby from the central executive wing, my tailored trench coat unbuttoned, my ice-blue eyes locking onto the team. Beside me, Lupita—who had been promoted to General Operations Manager less than two hours prior—held an official federal containment brief.
"The account is foreclosed, Richard," I announced, my voice dropping into a flat, mechanical frequency that cut right through the high-society background noise. "Vanguard's forensic audit division successfully matched the cloned signature certificates you used to siphon the employee healthcare pool. The federal prosecutor executed a complete asset freeze on your Delaware shell vehicle at six o'clock this morning."
Karla’s face turned an ugly shade of translucent grey, her hand dropping her terminal log as the steel links clicked loudly around Richard’s wrists before he could make a single defensive statement to his proxies.

"Ethan... wait," Richard rasped, his voice breaking into a cracked sob as they processed his frame toward the exit turnstiles. "This is an internal branch misunderstanding... we can restructure the margin allocations out of court..."
"The transaction is permanently closed, Richard," I replied coldly, as the guards led him past the silent desk. "The machine has finalized the liquidation."
