Chapter 6: The Repo Unit

The corporate repository in Cambridge was a concrete fortress surrounded by twelve-foot chain-link fences and high-definition surveillance networks. At 4:30 PM, I stood inside the sterile, industrial garage bay, watching the fleet mechanics run a diagnostic screen on the luxury SUV that had been repossessed from the Miller driveway earlier that morning.

David stood behind me, reviewing a digital spreadsheet on his tablet. "The vehicle inventory is complete, Ethan. The repo unit found two sets of expensive golf clubs, three designer weekend bags belonging to his sister, and a hidden compartment in the center console containing twelve thousand dollars in un-serialized cash vouchers from the Delaware shell node."

I reached into the front seat of the vehicle, my fingers wrapping around the leather-bound logbook in the glove compartment. I flipped through the pages, my eyes tracking the mileage records and the maintenance stamps.

Every single line item was a record of my own exploitation. The oil changes, the custom tire allocations, the premium fuel clearances—I had paid for all of it through my executive corporate accounts while Richard was busy driving his assets around high-end spots, laughing at the machine that kept their perfect lives running.

"The cash vouchers are critical," I said, my voice dropping into a low, clinical register. "Richard claimed he needed those corporate notary transfers to clear a legitimate commercial real estate mortgage in Delaware. Where did the vouchers actually originate, David?"

"An illegal sports-betting clearing house in Atlantic City," David explained, his face tightening with disgust. "Richard wasn't buying real estate, Ethan. He was funneling Vanguard’s corporate performance bonds directly into an illegal offshore credit line to cover his sister's gallery losses. They were planning to use your family estate to completely erase the paper trail before our internal audit committee could find the discrepancy."

I closed the logbook with a heavy, clean thud. The final calculation was complete. It wasn't just a matter of marital entitlement or arrogance. It was a systematic, fraudulent extraction ring operating inside my own home infrastructure.

"Call Detective Miller at the Fraud Division," I ordered, turning around to face my assistant, my eyes completely dark. "Tell him to freeze the Delaware shell accounts immediately. If Richard has been utilizing corporate electronic signature keys to process fraudulent wire transfers across state lines, the DA can escalate the charge to the federal level before the opening bell tomorrow."

"Right away, Boss," David said, his fingers rapidly moving across his display.

The heavy iron rolling doors of the garage bay creaked open, the cold evening air rushing into the space. Richard stood in the doorway, his designer suit rumpled, his hair uncombed, his face a mask of pure, frantic rage. He had tracked the SUV’s remote GPS system before his access token was deleted, his eyes wild as he recognized the vehicle.

"Ethan!" he roared, his voice echoing off the concrete walls as he strode toward the SUV. "You've gone too far! You turned off the water at the house! Melissa can't even wash her hands because of your corporate games!"

The two garage security guards instantly stepped forward, their hands lowering to their utility belts, but I raised my hand, signaling them to hold their positions. I stood beside the repossessed vehicle, my posture perfectly rigid.

"The water line was registered under my estate trust, Richard," I said, my voice perfectly level, completely devoid of fear. "I am no longer the trustee of your comfort. If your wife wants utility service, she can pay the municipal commission like every other resident of this city."

"This vehicle is registered under my name!" he shouted, slamming his fist against the hood of the black SUV.

"The vehicle is leased through Vanguard’s executive fleet program, Richard," I replied, pointing a calm finger at the corporate registration sticker on the glass windshield. "The primary lessee is Ethan Vance. You are a secondary driver whose authorization was permanently revoked at midnight. You are currently standing on private corporate property, committing a felony trespass."

He stared at me, his breathing ragged, his fists trembling at his sides. For a moment, the same violent impulse that had governed his actions in my hospital suite flared in his eyes. He stepped toward me, his hand lifting, his jaw tightening.

"Don't do it, Richard," I whispered, my voice dropping into a register that made him freeze dead in his tracks. "Look up at the concrete beams. There are four high-definition surveillance cameras tracking every movement in this bay. If you take one more step toward me, the guards won't just remove you—they’ll hand the footage directly to the grand jury before the rain stops. The transaction is closed."
