Chapter 12 - THE PLAN

The document was a profile of Ethan.

Net worth.

Properties.

Travel schedule.

Habits.

Friends.

Grief counseling appointments.

Sophie’s pediatric schedule.

Claire’s death date.

Marcus had compiled most of it.

Vanessa added notes.

LIKES CALM WOMEN.

RESPONDS TO PRAISE.

PROTECTIVE OF DAUGHTER.

GUILT AROUND WORK TRAVEL.

Ethan read until his skin crawled.

Their first meeting had not been chance.

The charity dinner.

The spilled wine.

Vanessa laughing.

Marcus introducing them.

All staged.

Even Vanessa’s supposed reluctance to date a widower.

Designed.

Ethan felt stupid.

Then angry at himself for feeling stupid.

Manipulation works because it uses real needs.

His grief had been real.

His loneliness had been real.

His love for Sophie had been real.

Vanessa had simply studied the doors.

The folder also contained videos of Sophie.

Not abuse.

Observation.

Vanessa recorded which punishments made Sophie quiet fastest.

Isolation.

Food withholding.

Threats that Ethan would leave.

The clinical tone was worse than shouting.

Ethan stopped reading.

Prosecutor Dana Wells said.

“We can use this.”

“Use all of it.”

“Some may be excluded.”

“Why?”

“Rules.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Wells did not take offense.

“Rules are why her lawyer can’t just invent evidence against you either.”

Fair.

Then came the biggest file.

Daniel Cross.

A scanned letter written two weeks before his death.

Daniel accused Marcus and Vanessa of stealing from a family trust.

He planned to go to federal authorities.

The original had vanished.

The cloud copy survived.

Ava read it.

Then cried quietly.

Not dramatic.

She just sat at Ethan’s kitchen table with tears falling onto the page.

Sophie brought her a napkin.

Ava laughed through the tears.

“Thanks.”

“It has a flower.”

“I see.”

Sophie sat beside her.

“My mommy died too.”

Ava looked at Ethan.

He looked away.

Then Ava said.

“Yeah.”

Sophie leaned against her arm.

No one made it bigger than that.

Three months later, Vanessa’s trial date was set.

Her defense strategy leaked quickly.

She would claim Ethan manipulated Sophie.

That Ava had false memories.

That Marcus was solely responsible.

And that every bruise on Sophie came from an accident.

Then Vanessa’s lawyer filed a motion containing one photograph.

Sophie at the bottom of the Malibu staircase.

Blood on her forehead.

Timestamped six months earlier.

Ethan had never seen it.

On the back was a message Vanessa had sent to Marcus.

NEXT TIME, SHE WON’T MISS THE EDGE.
