Chapter 11 - PRACTICE

Vanessa made Sophie stand near the top of the Malibu staircase.

Then she taught her what to say after falling.

I slipped.

I was running.

Nobody pushed me.

Sophie called it practice.

The same language Daniel Cross’s file contained.

Accidental fall.

Ava sat in the cottage kitchen while Sophie explained.

Her face went gray.

“That’s what she did to me.”

Ethan looked at her.

Ava nodded.

“Before Dad died.”

Vanessa had trained Ava too.

Not because Ava was supposed to fall.

Because Vanessa wanted a child witness who already knew the approved story.

Daniel fell.

Ava repeated it.

For two days.

Then she told Caleb the truth.

The pattern was no longer a coincidence.

Prosecutors reopened Daniel’s death as homicide.

Vanessa was charged with child abuse, witness intimidation, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and kidnapping-related offenses.

Marcus faced kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, obstruction, and more.

The murder charge came later.

Ava testified before a grand jury.

Afterward she sat on the courthouse steps.

Ethan joined her.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

“Cool.”

He smiled.

She looked at him.

“You really didn’t know?”

“About Vanessa?”

“About any of it.”

“No.”

Ava picked at a loose thread on her sleeve.

“I hated you.”

“Fair.”

“You had the house.”

“The money.”

“The kid.”

“You looked happy.”

Ethan stared at traffic.

“We were good at pictures.”

Ava nodded.

“So was she.”

Weeks passed.

Sophie started therapy.

She hated the first therapist.

“She talks like a cartoon teacher.”

Ethan found another.

The second therapist wore sneakers and let Sophie draw on the floor.

Sophie approved.

One afternoon Sophie drew three people.

Herself.

Ethan.

Ava.

Ethan asked.

“Who’s that?”

“Ava.”

“I can see that.”

“Her hair is bad.”

Ava, sitting nearby, said.

“Wow.”

Sophie giggled.

Then she added a fourth figure.

Vanessa.

Very small.

Outside the house.

A line between them.

A fence.

Ethan did not ask what it meant.

He let the picture be a picture.

That evening, Quinn called.

They had recovered Vanessa’s private cloud storage.

Inside was a folder named BENNETT.

Hundreds of files.

Financial records.

Photos.

Audio.

And a document created six months before Ethan ever met Vanessa.

Its title was simple.

May you like

WIDOWER.
