Chapter 8 - The Poison

One of Alexander’s guards caught him in the hallway before he made it to the stairs.

Richard slammed against the drywall. He screamed that it was a lie. That the crash had failed. That Gabriel had lived for years afterward.

Alexander stepped into the doorway and shouted the question that had been tormenting all of us.

“If the sabotage failed, how did Gabriel die?”

Richard stopped struggling. He wiped dust from his expensive jacket. And smiled.

That smile terrified me.

“You still don’t know?” Richard asked.

Alexander moved toward him. “Know what?”

Richard looked directly at me. “Your father didn’t die from a heart attack.”

My knees weakened. “No.”

“He was poisoned slowly.”

My stomach twisted. Bile rose in my throat. “Who?”

Richard said nothing. Alexander grabbed him by the lapels. “Who?”

Then Sofie spoke from behind us in the kitchen.

“Mommy?”

She was holding the photograph from the box. “There’s writing.”

I stumbled back to the table and took it from her. On the back, in my father’s handwriting, were six words.

Ask your mother about the medicine.

Everything inside me stopped. My mother. The woman who died six years after my father. The woman who prepared his pills every morning. The woman who had always told me never to investigate his old business life.

Richard started laughing from the hallway. “You finally understand. She wasn’t innocent.”

“Shut up,” I whispered.

“She worked for Victor. Before she married Gabriel. Your mother was originally hired to watch him.”

I slapped him. Hard. My palm stung, but I barely felt it.

He laughed again, blood on his teeth. “But she fell in love with him. That was the problem.”

“Why would she poison him?” I demanded.

May you like

Richard shrugged. “She didn’t. She changed sides. Play the final file.”
