Chapter 6 - The Apartment Above the Laundromat

Less than forty minutes later, we stood inside my cramped apartment. The kitchen light flickered. Two of Alexander’s security guards waited in the hallway.

Sofie immediately ran to the bedroom. She returned carrying Grandpa’s black metal box. I placed it on the kitchen table.

Alexander stared at it. “He built that at the office.”

I inserted the brass key into the crescent indentation beneath the box. It turned smoothly. For seventeen years, I had tried combinations, magnets, and locksmiths. Now the lid simply opened.

Inside was a photograph. My father stood beside a much younger Alexander and Richard. All three were smiling.

Beneath the photograph rested a sealed drive and another envelope.

I opened the envelope. The first document was a patent assignment. The second was a shareholder agreement.

The third made me sit down in the cheap plastic kitchen chair.

Gabriel Moreno owned forty-one percent of the company that eventually became Carter Global Technologies. That stake, adjusted through mergers and inherited rights, was worth billions.

Alexander looked at me. “I suspected it was large. I never knew the exact percentage.”

Richard stepped forward, his eyes darting between the papers. “Documents from thirty years ago won’t survive court.”

“They don’t have to.” Alexander picked up the second drive. “Gabriel stored audit logs.”

Richard’s face drained of color.

I fetched my old laptop from the counter. My hands were shaking so badly I dropped the power cord twice. Alexander connected the drive.

There were hundreds of files. Contracts. Bank transfers. Recorded meetings.

And one video file, labeled simply with my name.
