Chapter 19 - After the Noise

Six months later the grand staircase at the Moretti estate was covered in protective sheets. The property was being prepared for sale. Alessandro no longer lived there.

The distribution company's new operator had retained most of its staff, though some jobs were lost and transition payments couldn't erase that hurt. Karen stayed through the changeover. She occasionally sent Alessandro a terse update that ended with the same words: Don't interfere.

The harassment case had led to contact restrictions. Enzo stopped approaching Rosa. The business investigations continued, but the threats that followed her out of the estate had ended.

Rosa kept the job she'd earned on her own. Her supervisor offered her training for a team-lead position. On Sundays she and Maribel took Lily to the market, where the child insisted on inspecting every peach.

Alessandro rented a quiet apartment near the river. He was still financially comfortable. He was also learning to stand in a grocery line without assuming someone else would buy his food.

Cooperation couldn't erase his possible liability. He kept every legal appointment without calling himself a hero.

One afternoon he met Rosa in a family counselor's office to discuss expanding his time with Lily.

"She knows you care about her," the counselor said. "But consistency matters more than intensity. If your legal obligations change your availability, both adults need a plan to explain that without frightening her."

"I can do that," Alessandro said.

Rosa studied him. "You used to say 'I can' before you'd thought about the cost."

"I know. This time I've written down the alternatives."

He showed her a simple schedule, including Maribel as an emergency contact only with her agreement. There were no surprise visits, guards at doors, or promises of expensive presents.

Rosa read it carefully. "This is a start."

Alessandro smiled. "I'll take a start."

As they left, Lily ran ahead toward the little courtyard. She held up both arms to him.

"Bear man! Come see the leaves!"

He glanced at Rosa first. She nodded. Only then did he go.
