Chapter 15 - THE COASTAL ROAD

“Give me the address,” Ruiz said.

Luca already had it.

Harbor Nine Restoration occupied an old marine warehouse six miles north along the coast, behind a boatyard that had been closed since winter.

Ruiz called for units.

Dominic grabbed his coat.

“You stay here,” she said.

“No.”

“This is now an active criminal scene.”

“My fiancée just called me from inside it.”

“Exactly why you stay here.”

Dominic looked at Luca.

Ruiz stepped closer. “Do not make me arrest you to keep you out of my way.”

“Then don’t.”

He walked past her.

Natalie caught his sleeve.

“Dom.”

He stopped.

She looked exhausted, soaked, furious, terrified.

“Bring back the truth,” she said. “Not revenge.”

Their mother’s words.

Dominic nodded.

“I will.”

He and Luca left through the side entrance before Ruiz could finish swearing at him.

The coastal road was slick and almost empty.

Rain swept across the windshield in sheets.

Luca drove.

Dominic called Brooke again.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then Luca’s dashboard display lit with an incoming call from the estate.

Emma.

“Dominic, Brooke took my phone earlier.”

“What?”

“When she disappeared. I thought I dropped it, but my watch just showed it moving.”

“Where?”

“North. Same direction as you.”

Luca glanced at Dominic.

“Can you share location?”

“I already did.”

A blue dot appeared on the dashboard map.

It was moving.

Fast.

Two miles ahead.

Dominic stared through the rain.

A black Range Rover came into view beyond a curve.

“That’s her.”

Luca accelerated.

The Rover swerved around a delivery truck.

Dominic called Emma’s phone.

Brooke answered this time.

“You’re following me.”

“You called me.”

“I called because Adrian is insane.”

“You knew that before you agreed to marry me for him.”

Silence.

Then Brooke said, “You heard us.”

“Enough.”

“Then you know this was never supposed to hurt you.”

Dominic laughed without humor.

“You stole from my mother, threatened my sister, used my nephew’s medical records, forged my name, and planned to frame me for all of it.”

“I meant emotionally.”

Even Luca looked at him after that.

Dominic closed his eyes for one second.

“Where is Adrian?”

“At the warehouse.”

“Why are you going there?”

“Because he has the originals.”

“Drive to the police.”

“He’ll destroy them.”

“Brooke.”

“You want proof? This is proof.”

The Range Rover took a sharp right through the old boatyard gate.

Luca slowed.

Dominic’s phone stayed connected.

Brooke whispered, “I see his car.”

“Leave.”

“No.”

“Brooke, for once in your life, do exactly what I tell you.”

Her voice shook.

“Funny. I used to think that was why I hated you.”

“What?”

“Because you always sounded like you owned the room.”

A metallic crash came through the phone.

Brooke screamed.

Dominic heard Adrian’s voice in the distance.

“You should have kept driving.”

The line cut.

Luca stopped fifty yards from the warehouse.

Smoke curled from a broken second-floor window.

Dominic got out.

Sirens were still far behind them.

He looked at Luca.

“You promised Noah you wouldn’t become your father,” Luca said.

Dominic stared at the warehouse doors.

“I promised him I’d stop them.”

Then a gunshot cracked inside.
