Chapter 4 - Box 314

The cemetery gates locked within ninety seconds.
Giovanni’s people moved with practiced speed: cars sealed exits, phones disappeared into evidence bags, mourners were moved into the basement reception room beneath the chapel.
No police sirens came.
Not yet.
This was Vescari property, and Giovanni wanted answers before uniforms turned the morning into paperwork.
Emilio sat beside Clarissa on a storage bench.
She was shaking.
He was not touching her.
Lucia noticed.
A year earlier, he would have wrapped both arms around Clarissa if a waiter had spilled water near her.
Now there was a six-inch gap between them that felt like a canyon.
Giovanni stood over her. “Who knew you were coming here?”
“No one.”
“That phone knew.”
Clarissa looked at Emilio.
“Tell him,” Emilio said.
Her eyes widened. “You don’t understand.”
“You’re right. I don’t.” His voice broke. “I don’t understand the fake passport with my face on it. I don’t understand why somebody called to celebrate my mother being dead. And I definitely don’t understand why somebody just fired a rifle through her chapel window.”
Clarissa whispered, “I was trying to protect you.”
Lucia laughed bitterly. “From what? Accountability?”
Giovanni raised a hand. “We go to Box 314 now.”
Emilio looked toward the ceiling. “The bank isn’t open.”
“It will be.”
Twenty-five minutes later, Giovanni, Lucia, Emilio, Clarissa, Marco, and the family attorney, Vincent Cole, entered the private banking floor of Atlantic National through a side entrance.
The branch manager wore his suit jacket over pajama pants.
Nobody commented.
Helena’s blue key opened one lock.
The manager’s key opened the other.
Box 314 slid out.
Lucia felt sick.
Her mother had prepared this while knowing something was coming.
Giovanni placed the box on a private-room table.
Inside were five items.
A flash drive.
A handwritten ledger.
A sealed DNA-test envelope.
A hotel key card from St. Maarten.
And a photograph.
Emilio picked up the photograph first.
It showed Clarissa seated at an outdoor restaurant on the island.
Across from her sat a gray-haired man in a white linen shirt.
Emilio knew the face.
Everybody in the family did.
Rafael Sanz.
Giovanni’s oldest living enemy.
The man who had vanished after the federal case against him collapsed twelve years earlier.
Emilio looked at Clarissa.
“You told me you went to the spa Tuesday afternoon.”
Clarissa said nothing.
He slammed the photograph down. “You met Sanz while my mother was dying?”
“I had to.”
Giovanni’s voice turned deadly calm. “Why?”
Clarissa looked at him. “Because he’s my father.”
The words stunned even Marco.
Lucia blinked. “Your name is Harrington.”
“My mother’s name.”
Giovanni’s stare did not change, but Lucia saw a pulse jump in his jaw.
Clarissa continued. “Rafael left when I was six. He came back into my life three years ago.”
“Right before you met Emilio,” Lucia said.
Clarissa looked down.
Emilio’s face crumpled in slow motion.
“No.”
“I did love you.”
“Did?”
“I do.”
“Did he send you to me?”
Clarissa didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Emilio stepped back from the table.
Giovanni opened Helena’s ledger.
Page after page listed dates, shell companies, transfer amounts, initials, and handwritten notes.
Lucia leaned closer.
One company appeared again and again.
BLUE HERON CONSULTING.
Emilio frowned. “I’ve never heard of it.”
Vincent Cole, the attorney, went still.
Giovanni noticed.
“Vincent?”
The lawyer cleared his throat. “It’s an old vendor.”
“For what?”
“Compliance work.”
Lucia pointed to one transfer. “Two point eight million dollars for compliance?”
Vincent’s eyes shifted.
Giovanni turned a page.
Helena had written one line in red ink.
V.C. KNOWS.
The room changed instantly.
Marco stepped behind Vincent.
Vincent raised both hands. “Giovanni, whatever you think—”
The bank’s lights went out.
Emergency lamps flickered red.
Someone screamed in the hallway.
Then the steel door to the private room clicked shut from the outside.
And smoke began pouring under it.
