Chapter 16 - Vanessa's Last Performance

The ballroom looked different empty.

Three hundred chairs.

Half-dead flowers.

Champagne abandoned in warm glasses.

The stage lights still glowing over a room where Vanessa Sterling had expected applause.

She stood alone beside the dessert table.

Same silver gown.

No cameras now.

Or so she believed.

"You came," Vanessa said.

Naomi stopped ten feet away.

"You asked."

"Still polite. I always hated that."

"I noticed."

Vanessa smiled.

"Do you know why?"

Naomi waited.

"Because I could never tell if you were afraid of me."

"I wasn't."

"Exactly."

For the first time, Vanessa sounded honest.

"Everyone else adjusted. Elena cried. Jules avoided me. Evelyn paid. Martin obeyed. Dominic looked away whenever looking closely became inconvenient. You just watched."

"So you researched me."

"Victor did."

"And Daniel?"

Vanessa tilted her head.

"Victor had old problems. Old files. I collect useful things."

"You paid him to alter my report?"

"Before I knew you existed? Don't flatter yourself."

Naomi's expression didn't change.

"Then why was the fake Price trust linked to your office?"

That landed.

Vanessa looked away for one fraction of a second.

Enough.

"Victor moved money through dozens of addresses."

"But you knew."

"Knowing isn't doing."

"That's what Evelyn told herself."

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

Naomi took one step closer.

"You didn't bring me here to confess. You brought me here because Victor has been arrested and you don't know what he kept."

Silence.

"You want me to tell you what we found."

Vanessa's smile returned, thinner now.

"Maybe you're smarter than you look in that uniform."

Naomi looked down at the gray housekeeping dress.

"This uniform is the reason you talked around me for six weeks."

Vanessa's smile vanished.

Naomi continued.

"You discussed staff settlements in the powder room. You dictated donor notes in the kitchen. You told Victor to 'handle Mara' while I was replacing towels in the guest suite."

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

"You can't prove that."

"No."

Naomi let the word breathe.

"But Mara can prove the donor files. Jules has the original authorizations. Police have Victor's hard drive. Martin has the vendor payments. Evelyn has the settlements."

Vanessa's breathing changed.

"And Dominic?"

"Dominic is turning over the foundation servers."

That hit hardest.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"He wouldn't."

"He already did."

Vanessa's face transformed.

The charming woman disappeared.

The woman who kicked people when no one important was supposed to see them came back.

"You ruined everything."

Naomi shook her head.

"No. I caught your ankle."

Vanessa snatched a champagne bottle from the dessert table and raised it.

Naomi didn't move.

"Put it down."

"Don't tell me what to do!"

The ballroom doors opened.

Two detectives entered.

Owen behind them.

Vanessa froze with the bottle still in her hand.

Naomi touched the tiny microphone beneath her collar.

"You forgot something," she said.

Vanessa stared.

"What?"

"This time, you didn't get to turn the camera off."
