CHAPTER 25 - The Reunion

The Ashford estate sprawled across fifty acres of prime Hamptons coastline, a sprawling mansion of weathered stone and elegant architecture that had once been Malcolm Ashford's summer retreat. Now, it belonged to someone else entirely.

The security at the front gate was minimal—a single guard, who nodded at Richard's vehicle and waved them through without a word.

"She's expecting us," Richard murmured.

Vivienne's heart was pounding so hard she could barely breathe. She had imagined this moment a thousand times—the moment she would finally meet the third child, the other survivor, the person who had been searching for her just as she had been searching for them.

The front door opened before they could knock.

A woman stood in the doorway, her face illuminated by the warm light spilling out from the grand foyer behind her. She was tall and elegant, with dark hair swept back from her face and eyes that were the same shade of silver-gray as Vivienne's.

And around her neck, she wore a silver locket.

Identical to Vivienne's.

Identical to the one in the safe deposit box.

"Vivienne," the woman said softly, her voice trembling with emotion. "I've been waiting for so long."

Vivienne stepped forward, her legs shaking beneath her. "Who are you?"

The woman smiled, her eyes filling with tears. "My name is Catherine Ashford. I was the baby in the fire. I was the child Emily and Grace saved. And I am your cousin."

Vivienne's breath left her in a rush. "Catherine? But my mother—Emily—she—"

"She raised you as her own," Catherine said gently. "But she never forgot who I was. She visited me, whenever she could. She told me stories about you, Vivienne. She told me everything."

Samuel stepped forward, his face pale with shock. "So you're the third child? You're the one Grace was talking about?"

Catherine nodded slowly. "Grace knew who I was. She's been protecting me for years. Just like she's been protecting all of us."

"Where is she?" Vivienne demanded. "Where is Grace Ellis?"

Catherine's expression grew somber. "She's safe. I had her brought here before the police arrived. She's been through so much—we all have. But she's with me now, and I'll protect her."

Richard stepped forward, his voice steady but filled with urgency. "We found the journal. Catherine Ashford's journal. We know everything—about the trafficking, about Malcolm, about the children he stole and placed in positions of power."

Catherine nodded slowly. "I know. I've been gathering evidence for years. I have everything we need to bring him down. But I need your help to do it."

Vivienne looked at her cousin—the woman who had been a ghost her entire life, the survivor who had been watching over her in ways she never could have imagined.

"You've been watching me," Vivienne said softly. "All these years. The little girl in the rain, the messages, the clues—you've been leading me here."

Catherine smiled, a sad, gentle smile. "I had to be sure. I had to know that you were ready. And now..." She reached out, taking Vivienne's hands in hers. "Now I know that you are."

The two women stood there, hands clasped, surrounded by the generations of pain and secrets and lies that had shaped their lives.

"We need to end this," Vivienne said firmly. "We need to stop Malcolm once and for all."

Catherine nodded. "There's someone else who can help us. Someone who knows Malcolm's inner circle better than anyone."

Richard's expression sharpened. "Who?"

Catherine's eyes gleamed with a fierce, determined light. "His wife. Victoria Ashford. She's been living in exile, but she knows everything. And she's willing to testify."

Samuel's face crumpled with shock. "Victoria? She would help us?"

Catherine smiled coldly. "She wants to survive. And the only way she survives is if Malcolm falls. She'll give us everything we need to destroy him."

Vivienne squeezed her cousin's hands, a surge of hope flooding through her.

May you like

"Then let's do it," she said. "Let's end this."

To be continued...
