Chapter 6 - The Man Who Drove Him Home

Antoine had driven Thomas for twelve years.
He had carried him bleeding out of a warehouse in 2017.
He had buried Thomas's dog.
He had stood at Thomas's mother's grave every November with white roses.
Now he was running through The Séance with Celeste's ledger under his arm.
Thomas fired once into the ceiling.
"Antoine!"
The driver stopped at the kitchen door.
Slowly, he turned.
"Don't make me do this, boss."
"You already did it."
Antoine's eyes were wet.
"Jacques has my son."
Thomas lowered the gun by one inch.
"Where?"
"I don't know. He called me an hour ago. Said I bring him the ledger or Mateo goes into the river."
Maya appeared behind Thomas.
"Give us the pages."
Antoine shook his head.
"You don't understand Jacques."
Thomas took one step forward.
"I understand him now."
"No. You understand him too late."
A red laser dot appeared on Antoine's chest.
Thomas saw it first.
"Down!"
The shot came through the kitchen window.
Antoine spun and crashed into the pantry door.
The ledger slid across the tile.
Thomas fired through the window while Maya dragged Antoine behind the counter.
Rosa screamed from the lounge.
"Stay down!" Maya shouted.
Thomas grabbed the ledger.
Outside, tires screamed away.
He knelt beside Antoine.
Blood spread beneath the driver's shoulder.
"Mateo," Antoine gasped. "St. Agnes warehouse."
Thomas's face changed.
"St. Agnes?"
Maya looked at him.
"That's where Gabriel said the missing containers went."
Antoine grabbed Thomas's sleeve.
"Jacques knows about Rosa. He knows everything. He told Moreau to confirm the match."
"What match?"
Antoine swallowed.
"Paternity."
Thomas's eyes hardened.
"Why?"
"Because blood gives him leverage. He was going to use the girl if Maya wouldn't hand over the ledger."
Maya went white.
Antoine pulled a key card from his pocket.
"Warehouse sixteen. South entrance."
Thomas took it.
"You're coming with us."
"No." Antoine coughed. "I'll slow you down."
"You have never been allowed to tell me no."
Antoine gave a weak laugh.
"First time for everything."
Rosa stepped into the kitchen.
She saw the blood and stopped.
"Is he dying?"
Antoine looked at her.
"Not tonight, little one."
Then his eyes returned to Thomas.
"Jacques has more than my son."
Thomas leaned closer.
"Who?"
Antoine whispered, "Dr. Moreau copied every test result before he disappeared. He found six other children with Rousseau-linked samples."
Maya stared.
"Six?"
Antoine nodded.
"Jacques has been looking for compatible blood relatives for years."
Thomas's voice went cold.
"Compatible for what?"
Antoine closed his eyes.
"For you."
