Chapter 11 - The Agent with Bellacourt Blood

Daniel Ross had worked inside the attorney general’s office for nine years.
He had access to fraud intelligence.
Witness locations.
Sealed subpoenas.
Internal complaints.
He also had access to me.
Victoria had selected his name for the false paternity claim because she knew the truth of his birth.
Daniel was her son.
The Bellacourt heir.
Mara confronted him inside a secure interview room.
I watched from behind the glass.
Daniel studied the photograph.
“I was told Alexander died.”
“You are Alexander,” Mara said.
“No.”
“Your fingerprints match the childhood file.”
He looked toward her.
“You knew?”
“Not until today.”
Daniel pressed both hands against the table.
“Our mother worked for Victoria.”
“She helped move you.”
“Why?”
“She believed she was protecting you.”
“Everyone in this case loves that word.”
Mara’s voice broke slightly.
Daniel looked toward the glass.
He could not see me.
“Did Victoria contact you?”
“No.”
“Has she ever approached you?”
“Not under her name.”
“Who?”
Daniel thought.
“A confidential source named V.”
“She gave information about Bellacourt accounts.”
“She helped build the case.”
Victoria had been feeding evidence into the investigation.
Why?
To eliminate Cross Bank.
To remove Adrian.
To weaken Celeste.
To frighten Evan.
She wanted the empire cleaned of every competing branch before revealing Daniel as heir.
My audit had not threatened her entire plan.
It had been useful until I became legally connected to the trust through Grace.
Then I became expendable.
Daniel opened his phone.
Messages from V appeared.
The most recent arrived that morning.
YOUR SISTER IS COMPROMISED.
CLAIRE WILL USE YOU NEXT.
TAKE THE CHILD BEFORE THE TRUST HEARING.
My stomach turned cold.
“She ordered you to take Grace.”
Daniel looked horrified.
“I thought it referred to evidence.”
“You did not understand?”
“No.”
Mara examined the message.
“Did you respond?”
“I asked which child.”
“V never answered.”
Daniel surrendered every device.
Internal affairs suspended him.
He agreed to a DNA test.
The result confirmed Victoria as his biological mother.
Conrad Bellacourt was his father.
Daniel Ross was Alexander Bellacourt.
The Continuity Trust recognized him as the oldest surviving biological descendant.
If the trust remained valid, Daniel controlled the family empire.
He did not want it.
Victoria did not care what he wanted.
She filed a petition through a hidden attorney declaring him the rightful beneficiary.
The trust freeze entered a new legal battle.
Bellacourt executives began contacting Daniel.
Some offered loyalty.
Others offered money.
One threatened to expose his access to the investigation.
Daniel’s entire career could be destroyed by the family identity hidden from him.
He met me privately with Mara present.
“I need to apologize.”
“For what?”
“Victoria used my name to attack you.”
“You did not know.”
“I also reviewed two of your early audit referrals.”
“Did you delay them?”
“One.”
“Why?”
“The source named V said the vendor was connected to an active undercover operation.”
“It was Victoria’s company.”
“Yes.”
Daniel had unknowingly protected his mother’s fraud.
“You made the decision.”
“Yes.”
“You need to disclose it.”
“I have.”
“Then let the review decide.”
He looked toward Grace’s room.
“Do you believe I would hurt her?”
“I don’t know you well enough anymore to answer that.”
The honesty hurt him.
It also protected both of us.
Daniel formally renounced any personal claim to the Bellacourt trust.
The court refused immediate acceptance.
Trust law required a succession review.
Victoria surfaced publicly the next day.
She entered the courthouse surrounded by attorneys.
Reporters shouted questions.
She wore her pearls again.
She looked directly toward the cameras.
“My son was stolen from me.”
“I have spent thirty years searching.”
“Now government officials are pressuring him to reject his birthright.”
She transformed herself into the grieving mother.
Mara watched the statement on television.
“She gave him away.”
“Yes.”
“She erased our family.”
“Yes.”
“Now she says he was stolen.”
“That is how she survives.”
Victoria surrendered on limited fraud charges while denying kidnapping, attempted medical harm, and conspiracy.
Her attorneys argued she had arranged Grace’s transfer out of concern.
The chapel nurse supported her.
Then Mara found the nurse’s payment account.
It had been funded by Daniel Ross.
Daniel stared at the record.
“I never sent that money.”
The transfer carried his government credentials.
Victoria had built a second frame.
If she could not control her son through blood, she would control him through accusation.
The court ordered Daniel detained pending investigation.
Mara looked at me.
“She is taking everyone.”
“No.”
I looked toward Victoria entering the courthouse.
“She is gathering everyone in one place.”
“For what?”
“The trust hearing.”
Victoria wanted the entire family before one judge.
She believed she would reclaim the company legally.
She did not know I had found the clause her attorneys missed.
The Continuity Trust dissolved automatically if any trustee endangered a minor beneficiary for financial control.

All I had to prove was that Grace had been endangered because of the trust.
And Victoria had left the proof inside the bathroom door.
