CHAPTER 3 The Fall of the Sterling Empire

The next morning, the headlines were everywhere.

"Sterling Foundation Under Investigation After Gala Scandal."

"Heiress Accused of Misusing Family Charity Funds."

"Woman Humiliated at Gala Reveals Hidden Identity."

For the first time in years...

Victoria Sterling woke up and realized the world was no longer cheering for her.

Her phone wouldn't stop ringing.

Investors.

Reporters.

Business partners.

People who once begged for her attention were suddenly impossible to reach.

She threw the phone across the room.

"This is impossible."

Her father stood near the window.

Silent.

That silence angered her more than shouting.

"You're just going to stand there?"

Richard Sterling didn't turn around.

"What do you want me to say?"

"That you believe me!"

He slowly faced her.

"Do I?"

The question hit her.

Because she expected anger.

She expected protection.

She expected her family to fix everything.

But for the first time...

Nobody was coming to save her.

Three days earlier, Victoria had owned every room she entered.

Now...

She couldn't even enter her own company without people whispering.

Employees who once smiled nervously now avoided her.

The assistant who used to bring her coffee quietly resigned.

The receptionist who had been ignored for years finally looked her in the eyes.

And Victoria hated it.

Not because she lost respect.

Because she finally understood what it felt like to be invisible.

The same way Evelyn had felt.

But Victoria was not someone who accepted defeat.

She had built her entire life on control.

And she wasn't going to lose everything without a fight.

That afternoon, she called her lawyer.

"I want everything on Evelyn Carter."

The lawyer hesitated.

"Ms. Sterling..."

"Everything."

"Find something."

"Anything."

"There has to be a reason she hides her identity."

The lawyer sighed.

"Everyone has secrets."

Victoria smiled.

"Exactly."

Two days later...

The lawyer returned.

Victoria looked up eagerly.

"Tell me."

He placed a folder on the table.

"We found something."

Her smile returned.

"What?"

"Evelyn Carter disappeared from public life eight years ago."

"Before taking control of the hotel empire."

Victoria leaned forward.

"Why?"

The lawyer hesitated.

"Because of a family tragedy."

"What kind?"

He opened the folder.

"Her father."

Victoria frowned.

"Her father died after a business collapse."

"And?"

"The collapse was caused by..."

He paused.

"Sterling Holdings."

Silence.

Victoria's expression changed.

"What?"

"The Carter family lost everything after a deal with your grandfather went wrong."

Victoria stood.

"You're saying my family destroyed hers?"

The lawyer nodded.

"But there's more."

He handed her another document.

"Your grandfather knew."

"He hid evidence."

Victoria stared at the papers.

For the first time...

She felt something besides anger.

Fear.

That evening...

Victoria went to meet Evelyn.

Not at the hotel.

Not at the gala.

At the small foundation office where Evelyn spent most of her time.

The irony wasn't lost on her.

The woman she thought was powerless...

Was surrounded by people who respected her.

Victoria entered.

Evelyn looked up.

"I was wondering when you would come."

Victoria forced a smile.

"You knew?"

"I knew you would search for my past."

Victoria sat down.

"You could destroy my family."

Evelyn was quiet.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised her.

"You admit it?"

"I admit I have the power."

"But I never wanted revenge."

Victoria frowned.

"Then why expose me?"

Evelyn looked at her.

"Because you hurt people."

"You weren't punished because you embarrassed me."

"You were exposed because you believed other people were beneath you."

Victoria looked away.

"Your family destroyed mine."

The words finally came.

Quietly.

Evelyn continued.

"My father trusted your grandfather."

"They partnered on a development project."

"When the project failed, your grandfather moved all the losses onto my father's company."

"My father lost everything."

"He died believing everyone abandoned him."

Victoria swallowed.

"I didn't know."

"No."

Evelyn nodded.

"Because people like your family are very good at hiding the damage they cause."

For a moment...

Victoria saw Evelyn differently.

Not as an enemy.

Not as someone who defeated her.

But as someone who had carried pain silently for years.

Then Victoria whispered:

"So this was revenge."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

"Revenge would have been destroying you without warning."

"I gave you a chance."

"A chance to show kindness."

"You chose cruelty."

Victoria had no answer.

Because she knew it was true.

Before Victoria left...

Evelyn stopped her.

"There is one more thing."

Victoria turned.

"What?"

Evelyn placed a small envelope on the table.

"Your grandfather left this before he died."

Victoria frowned.

"Why would you have it?"

"Because he sent it to my father."

Victoria opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

She read the first line.

And her hands started shaking.

"I know what I did was wrong. But if my family ever learns the truth, they will destroy everything to protect the Sterling name."

Victoria looked up.

"What is this?"

Evelyn's expression became serious.

"The truth your family spent thirty years hiding."

That night...

Victoria returned home.

She opened the letter again.

And found a second page hidden inside.

A list of names.

Bank accounts.

Payments.

And one signature at the bottom.

Not her grandfather's.

Not her father's.

Someone still alive.

Someone currently running Sterling Holdings.

Victoria stared at the name.

Her blood ran cold.

Because the person who destroyed Evelyn's family...

Was not her grandfather.

Not even her father.

It was someone much closer.

May you like

Someone she trusted.

Her own mother.
