Chapter 7 - THE COUNTERATTACK

Celeste’s lawyers attacked the survey.
Then the trust.
Then Dad.
They claimed he had altered boundaries after the incident.
Impossible.
The map was twenty-one years old.
So they accused me of provoking Celeste.
That failed too.
Then Victor made his move.
He blamed his daughter.
Publicly.
He called her behavior “deeply inconsistent with Harrow Crest values.”
Celeste watched the statement on television.
Then threw a wineglass at the wall.
“You knew.”
Victor did not answer.
“You knew about every complaint.”
“Celeste.”
“You paid people.”
His face tightened.
I looked at Dad.
Dad looked at the attorney.
Victor realized too late.
Celeste had said it in front of witnesses.
“Paid who?” I asked.
Victor stood.
“No.”
Celeste laughed.
“Oh, now you’re scared?”
“Stop talking.”
“You paid the maid in Paris.”
Victor grabbed her arm.
Dad’s security stepped forward.
Celeste ripped free.
“The concierge in Miami.”
“Celeste!”
“The driver in Aspen.”
Victor shouted.
“Shut your mouth!”
She did.
Too late.
The attorney had recorded the meeting with consent from Dad.
One-party consent was enough where we were.
Victor knew that.
He looked at Dad.
“You set me up.”
Dad’s voice stayed calm.
“No.”
“I gave your daughter a room and she filled it.”
The investigation widened.
Settlements.
Nondisclosure agreements.
Cash reimbursements coded as guest recovery.
Twenty-three complaints became forty-one.
Then sixty-eight.
Different properties.
Different executives.
Same pattern.
Protect the brand.
Silence the employee.
Dad suspended the bridge facility.
Not canceled.
Suspended.
Harrow Crest had seventy-two hours to install independent oversight.
Victor refused.
The board overruled him.
Celeste called me that night.
I answered.
Mistake.
“You happy?”
“No.”
“Liar.”
“I’m tired.”
“You destroyed my family.”
“You slapped me.”
“You punched me!”
“You grabbed my hair.”
“I was angry.”
“So was I.”
Silence.
Then her voice changed.
Soft.
“You think your father can protect you forever?”
I stood.
“What does that mean?”
She hung up.
Ten minutes later, Dad’s driver called.
Their car had been hit on the highway.
May you like
Dad was inside.
