The Maid Made His Silent Sister Laugh—Then the Mafia Boss Uncovered Her Three-Year Secret
Chapter 1 - The Laughter Behind the Door
Santiago Moretti came home four hours early—and heard something he hadn't heard in seven years.
His sister laughing.
The thirty-eight-year-old Chicago mafia boss froze outside Sophia’s bedroom.
Sophia hadn't spoken since she was twelve. Seven years of expensive specialists, treatments, and failed promises had convinced everyone she was unreachable.
Yet through the half-open door, Santiago saw his nineteen-year-old sister sitting on the carpet, laughing silently as the new maid moved her hands.
Ruby Brennan.
A quiet housekeeper he'd barely noticed in six weeks.
Ruby signed something. Sophia signed back. Then both dissolved into laughter.
For the first time in years, Sophia looked genuinely happy.
Until she saw Santiago.
Her smile vanished.
Ruby turned and stood.
“What are you doing with my sister?” Santiago demanded.
“Talking to her.”
“She understands you?”
Ruby met his stare.
“She understands everything.”
Those four words unsettled him.
“How long?”
“Three weeks.”
“And what has she told you?”
Ruby hesitated.
“That’s between Sophia and me.”
Santiago’s expression darkened.
“She’s my sister.”
“And she trusts me.”
“Tell me what she said.”
Ruby glanced at Sophia, then spoke quietly.
“She heard every doctor who called her unreachable. Every conversation about what she should eat, wear, or do. She heard people discussing her as if she weren't there.”
Santiago stiffened.
“She heard you, too.”
“What?”
“She knows you stand outside her door at night.”
His blood ran cold.
“How could you possibly know that?”
Sophia signed three quick words.
Ruby translated.
“Because she told me.”
For seven years, Santiago had believed his sister was lost inside herself.
Now he realized she had been watching everything.
“Downstairs,” he ordered.
Minutes later, Ruby stood before his mahogany desk.
“What do you want from Sophia?”
“Nothing.”
“Everyone wants something.”
Ruby held his gaze.
“Your sister wants someone to talk to.”
“We gave her communication devices.”
“Devices aren't relationships.”
“We gave her a writing board.”
“And who writes back?”
Silence.
“You gave her ways to ask for food and medicine,” Ruby continued. “But you never gave her a real conversation.”
Santiago's jaw tightened.
“You're a maid. Not a doctor.”
“No.”
“Not a therapist.”
Something painful flickered across Ruby's face.
“No,” she whispered.
He noticed.
Then dismissed it.
“You're fired. Fifteen minutes to collect your belongings.”
Ruby went pale.
For a moment, she looked ready to argue.
Instead, she turned toward the door.
Then stopped.
“She likes green.”
Santiago frowned.
“What?”
“Your sister. She likes green. Not blue.”
Ruby looked back.
“Her curtains, her bedsheets, her clothes—almost everything is blue. She hates it.”
“How do you know?”
Ruby's answer cut deeper than any threat he'd ever received.
“Because I asked her.”
She walked out.
And the mansion fell silent again.
That night, Santiago stood outside Sophia's bedroom, staring at the blue curtains he'd personally chosen.
For the first time, he wondered how many other things he'd gotten wrong.
Then he made a call.
“Tomas. Find everything you can about Ruby Brennan.”
“How deep, boss?”
“Everything.”
Three days later, Tomas returned with a sixty-three-page investigation.
Santiago opened the first page.
And suddenly understood two horrifying truths.
He had fired the only person who had truly reached his sister in seven years.
And Ruby Brennan had been hiding a secret for three years—a secret that could destroy everything Santiago believed about Sophia's silence.
But when he turned to the second page, he found something even worse.
Ruby hadn't entered his mansion by accident.
