Chapter 8 - The Door at Midnight

Tessa backed away from the door.

"Go away!"

The handle turned again.

"Miss Miller, this doesn't need to become unpleasant."

She grabbed her phone.

"You're trespassing. I'm calling the police."

A second voice spoke outside.

"She's calling somebody."

Footsteps.

Then silence.

Tessa called emergency services, explained the attempted entry, and remained inside until officers arrived.

Nobody was in the hallway when they reached her apartment.

But the building's entrance camera had captured two men.

One wore a dark jacket with the logo of Harbor Recovery.

The other kept his face turned away.

The officers took her statement and advised her to contact them if the men returned.

By morning, the incident had become part of the ongoing investigation into threats and possible unlawful collection practices.

Tessa hadn't slept.

She arrived at the Costa estate with swollen eyes and a cardboard box containing some of her mother's papers.

Damian was in the entrance hall.

He took one look at her.

"What happened?"

She told him.

His expression darkened.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Did they get inside?"

"No."

"Good."

The single word sounded almost violent.

Tessa folded her arms.

"I didn't come here so you could send somebody after them."

Damian went still.

"What did you come here for?"

"Because Beatrice expects me at nine."

He stared at her.

After everything, she had still come for his mother.

Something like shame moved through him.

He'd once believed her kindness was a performance.

Now he was starting to understand that it was a discipline.

A decision she made repeatedly, even when life gave her every reason not to.

"Tessa, you don't have to work today."

"I need to work."

"You'll be paid."

"That's not what I mean."

She looked toward the staircase.

"Beatrice remembers routines better than faces. Yesterday she waited for me because I was late. I'm not going to disappear without explaining."

Damian nodded.

"Then let me walk you upstairs."

She hesitated.

"Okay."

It was a small concession.

He treated it like a gift.

Beatrice was sitting by the window when they entered.

She looked at Tessa.

Then she smiled.

"There you are."

Tessa's face crumpled.

She quickly turned away.

Beatrice reached for her.

"Come here, sweetheart."

Tessa sat beside her.

For a moment, she allowed the older woman to hold her hand.

Damian stood in the doorway, feeling like an intruder.

Later that morning, Tessa met with her attorney, Elena Brooks.

Elena was forty-two, direct, and unimpressed by powerful surnames.

She had already reviewed the Harbor Recovery documents.

"Some of these charges need to be verified," she explained. "The fact that they purchased a debt doesn't mean they can collect any amount they invent."

Tessa watched her carefully.

"Can they take my apartment?"

"They can't simply seize your home. But we need to examine the underlying obligations, any court judgments, and the threats they've made."

"And the men who came last night?"

"That's a criminal matter for the police. We'll preserve the evidence and make sure the investigators receive the relevant records."

Tessa exhaled.

For the first time, somebody was speaking to her in sentences that didn't begin with what she owed.

Then Elena looked at the photograph of Margaret.

"Why did you bring this?"

Tessa explained the clinic.

The connection to Damian's parents.

The date on the back.

The strange key.

Elena didn't leap to conclusions.

Instead, she asked questions.

"Was your mother ever reluctant to discuss your birth?"

"She didn't talk about it much."

"Do you have your original birth certificate?"

"I think so."

"Let's review it together."

Tessa hesitated.

"Do you think my mom lied to me?"

"I think we need evidence before deciding what happened."

That afternoon, they found an inconsistency.

Tessa's replacement birth certificate listed Thomas Miller as her father and Margaret Miller as her mother.

But the record had been amended in 2003.

Four years after her birth.

That could have had an innocent explanation.

Yet the amendment referred to an original supporting document unavailable through the standard online request.

Elena ordered a certified record search through the proper state process.

Tessa left the office feeling sick.

When she returned to the estate, Damian was waiting outside Beatrice's room.

"How was your appointment?"

"Complicated."

He nodded.

"Do you want to talk?"

"No."

"Okay."

She looked at him.

"You're not going to ask?"

"You said no."

Something in her expression softened.

Then Beatrice called from inside.

"Tessa?"

She turned toward the bedroom.

Beatrice sat upright, staring at the doorway.

"Margaret?"

Tessa froze.

Beatrice held out both hands.

"Margaret, you promised you'd bring her back."

Damian stepped forward.

"Mother?"

Beatrice looked between them.

Her face changed.

"No," she whispered.

Then she stared directly at Tessa.

"That's not Margaret."

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

"That's the baby."
