Chapter 18 - THE WEDDING IS CANCELED

I did not bring soldiers to Moretti estate gates. Six years earlier I would have considered that caution. Now I understood it as the first useful decision I made that day.
I formally cancel the wedding and freeze every joint transaction with Celeste. Media vans arrive within hours. Celeste frames the split as a mafia boss attacking a woman who uncovered employee theft.
I wrote down one sentence from the conversation and underlined it twice: I formally cancel the wedding and freeze every joint transaction with Celeste. The act of writing slowed me down enough to keep anger from deciding what the sentence meant before the evidence did.
Nikhil pushed the papers toward me. "Read the dates first."
"I can read."
"You can also decide too quickly. Today we are preventing the second problem."
I left the insult unanswered and read the dates.
The room kept returning to the same cluster of names - Celeste. None of them meant the same thing to everyone present. To me they were family, betrayal, debt, or history. To investigators they were entries that had to be connected without assuming the connection in advance.
The second fact mattered for a different reason: Media vans arrive within hours. It created a timeline problem, and timeline problems are harder to intimidate than people. Either the records could coexist or one of them was lying about when the truth began.
Nikhil ordered certified copies before anyone moved another paper in Moretti estate gates. He knew I disliked waiting, so he made me sign the evidence log myself. The line for my name was smaller than I expected.
I had once believed the wedding is canceled would be solved by identifying the person responsible and removing that person from the board. The longer the case went on, the more childish that idea seemed. Systems survive bad people because ordinary people keep making small accommodations around them.
Delia never asked me to become harmless. She asked me to become accountable. The distinction mattered because harmless men cannot protect anyone, but unaccountable men eventually convince themselves every harm is protection.
My own legitimate board worries that the scandal will destroy years of work moving our businesses into legal markets.
I read that part again. My own legitimate board worries that the scandal will destroy years of work moving our businesses into legal markets. The first reading belonged to the brother and son in me. The second belonged to the man who knew a courtroom would care far more about how the fact was proved than how badly it hurt.
"I need five minutes," I said.
"For what?"
"To be angry without turning it into instructions."
Nikhil nodded. "Take ten."
When I left Moretti estate gates, nothing outside looked different. Traffic moved, phones rang, someone somewhere complained about parking. That ordinary background became important to me. The people damaged by Pier 44 had still needed groceries, school pickups, rent, and sleep while men like my father called their suffering strategy.
I made one decision before the day ended: whatever the wedding is canceled revealed, I would not let my first response become another fact someone else had to survive. It was a small rule. Small rules were beginning to matter more to me than grand promises.
Tomas drove me home without music. At one red light he said, "You are thinking too loudly." I told him that was not a thing. He said, "It is in this car."
Before closing the file on The Wedding Is Canceled for the night, Nikhil made me state the strongest argument against my own conclusion. I hated the exercise. At Moretti estate gates, the strongest counterargument was not abstract: records could be incomplete, frightened witnesses could misremember, and people I loved had reasons to protect themselves. Saying that aloud did not weaken the case. It kept me from using certainty as a weapon before the facts had earned it.
I also began to understand that the wedding is canceled was changing my relationship with the organization I had built. Men who once brought me problems now brought me documentation. A captain who would previously have hidden a mistake until he could repair it called to report one before anyone asked. Fear had made the organization look efficient because it erased bad news. The new system looked messier. I was starting to trust the mess more.
Later, I wrote a single question at the top of a fresh page: WHO GETS HURT IF I AM WRONG ABOUT THE WEDDING IS CANCELED? The answer included people I disliked, people I loved, and people whose names I did not know yet. That was enough to make me slow down. I had spent half my life believing decisive men were the safest men in the room. Now I was learning that sometimes the safest decision is the one willing to survive another question.
Then the next piece arrived before any of us were ready.
Celeste announces she will seek an emergency injunction forcing the waterfront proxy transfer to proceed anyway.
