Chapter 12 - The Night Fern Was Born

I remembered almost nothing from Fern’s birth after the anesthesia.
Pain.
Bright lights.
A nurse saying, “Stay with me.”
Then waking up with an empty bassinet beside my bed.
Now every missing minute felt like a crime scene.
Stellan took us back to Saint Catherine’s after hours.
Not quietly.
He arrived with lawyers, security, and a court order so thick the hospital administrator looked physically ill.
I liked that part.
The records department handed over archived surveillance.
Most of the files from Fern’s birth night were “corrupted.”
Of course they were.
Darius recovered three clips from a backup server.
At 2:41 a.m., Mrs. Thornbury entered the NICU.
At 2:48, a woman in a dark coat entered through the service stairwell.
Rose.
My mother.
Alive.
At 2:53, they met outside a private treatment room.
I watched them argue.
No audio.
Rose pointed toward the public maternity floor.
Mrs. Thornbury shook her head.
Rose grabbed her arm.
Stellan paused the video.
“Agnes.”
Mrs. Thornbury stood behind us, pale.
“What were you arguing about?”
She looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you.”
I turned.
“What?”
“That someone had targeted your baby.”
“And my mother?”
“She said if you knew, you would run. Running would make you easier to find.”
I felt sick.
“You took orders from my dead mother.”
“She was not dead.”
“Thank you, Agnes. I’m current on that nightmare.”
She looked down.
“Rose had spent years building an escape network. The same shelters I later ran.”
Stellan frowned.
“She built them?”
“Some.”
“Why?”
Mrs. Thornbury looked at him.
“Because she worked for your family before you were old enough to know what the family really was.”
My anger sharpened.
“My mother was an accountant.”
“Yes.”
“For Cross Holdings?”
“For Gideon personally.”
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What did she do?”
“She moved money. Hid witnesses. Paid families after things went wrong.”
Stellan’s face changed.
“Rose was Ledger.”
Mrs. Thornbury nodded.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
“A codename. My father’s most trusted financial fixer disappeared five years ago. Nobody knew her real name.”
I laughed softly because the truth had become ridiculous.
“My mother packed coupons in an envelope marked ‘good ones.’”
Stellan looked almost sorry.
“She also moved millions for my father.”
The surveillance continued.
At 3:02 a.m., Mrs. Thornbury carried Fern through the service door.
At 3:05, Rose entered the records room.
At 3:17, she left with a folder under her coat.
Darius zoomed in.
The folder was marked CROSS - SUCCESSION TRUST.
Stellan went still.
“What?” I asked.
He did not answer immediately.
“Stellan.”
“My grandfather created a trust that transfers control of a large block of Cross Holdings shares when a direct heir is born.”
“To you?”
“To the child.”
I stared at Fern’s name on the screen.
“How much?”
“Twenty-two percent of the company.”
I almost laughed again.
“My daughter owns twenty-two percent of a company?”
“If the trust recognizes her.”
“Does it?”
Darius checked the archive.
His face changed.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Eleven months ago.”
“Under Fern?”
He shook his head.
“Under Ava Cross.”
Now the thirty-eight million dollars made sense.
The dead identity was not just a hiding place.
It was the legal owner of a fortune.
And somebody had been spending Fern’s money while the world believed she was dead.
