Chapter 13 - THE FOUNDATION KEYS

Two days later Emma sat in the boardroom of the Eleanor Sterling Children’s Foundation.
The other trustees watched her carefully.
William had transferred full operational control to her the night of the warehouse.
She now held the master encryption keys to every account.
A thin man in an expensive suit entered without knocking.
He placed a sealed envelope on the table.
“For Ms. Torres.”
Emma opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Ethan playing in the garden that morning.
A red circle drawn around his head.
A second sheet of paper held one line of text.
Resign by midnight or the next picture will be of a body.
The trustees murmured.
Emma stood.
“Meeting adjourned.”
She walked straight to William’s office.
He looked at the photograph and the note.
His face went white.
“We increase security.”
“That’s not enough.”
Emma’s voice was quiet and hard.
“She’s not after money anymore. She’s after revenge. And she still has people inside this city.”
William reached for the phone.
“Miller—”
Emma stopped his hand.
“No more police protection around Ethan. It makes him a target. We move him. Quietly.”
“Where?”
May you like
Emma looked out the window at the skyline.
“Somewhere even Isabella can’t buy.”
