Chapter 25 - THE SENATOR KNEW

Park ordered me not to go to the marina.
Grace threatened to have me physically restrained.
Sofia called me an idiot in Spanish.
Renata sent one message.
Don't make me right about you.
That was the one that worked.
I stayed in Park's car while tactical officers moved toward the storage building.
Every part of me wanted to get out.
I did not.
The radio cracked.
"Two males inside."
Then.
"Weapon visible."
Then.
"One subject is Marcus Vale."
My hands tightened on my knees.
Park spoke into the radio.
"Second subject?"
Static.
"Mateo Rivas."
I closed my eyes.
Negotiators called Mateo's phone.
He answered.
Park put him on speaker.
"Mr. Rivas, put the gun down and step outside."
Mateo laughed.
"Detective, I respect you. Don't waste the script."
"Where is Marcus?"
"Sitting down. Annoying me."
Marcus's voice came faintly through the line.
"She asked where I am, not for a review."
Mateo snapped, "Shut up."
Park said, "Daniel is here."
Silence.
"Put him on."
She looked at me.
I took the phone.
"Mateo."
"You weren't supposed to follow me."
"I didn't. Police did."
"That is somehow worse."
"Put the gun down."
"He killed Elena."
Marcus shouted, "I did not."
Mateo screamed back, "You covered it!"
"Mateo," I said.
He breathed hard.
"He took her bag. He buried the file. He threatened Renata. He sat in that room while they hurt her."
"I know."
"Then why are you protecting him?"
"I'm not."
"Sounds like it."
"I'm protecting you from becoming the last thing he destroys."
Silence.
I continued.
"You think shooting him pays Elena back?"
"No."
"Then why?"
"Because I want to."
That honesty almost broke me.
"I know."
Mateo's voice dropped.
"You don't."
"I do."
I looked at the warehouse where my daughter had once helped me count spark plugs for summer spending money.
"I wanted to kill Arturo when he admitted sending Luis. I wanted to kill Santiago before I ever saw his face. I wanted to break Marcus's neck at the docks."
Park watched me.
Grace would hate this transcript.
"What stopped you?" Mateo asked.
"Renata."
"She isn't my daughter."
"Javier is your grandson."
Silence.
"He almost died because of your plan with Santiago."
Mateo inhaled sharply.
"Don't do this."
"I'm doing it."
"Daniel."
"You don't get to call your violence love just because the person you're angry for is dead."
The line stayed quiet.
Then we heard metal hit concrete.
The gun.
Park signaled the tactical team.
"Hands visible!"
Shouting filled the radio.
Mateo came out first.
Marcus came out second.
Both alive.
Both handcuffed.
I did not feel victorious.
I felt old.
At the precinct, Marcus requested counsel and said nothing else.
Mateo was charged with unlawful weapons possession and attempted coercion.
His lawyer expected bail.
He did not look at me when officers led him away.
Park found something in the storage unit.
Cash.
Passports.
Marcus's emergency phone.
And Elena's leather satchel.
The same one Nora Keene had removed from the crash.
Nineteen years later, it still carried a dark scrape along one corner.
Park opened it under evidence protocol.
Inside were old legal pads, a broken pen, two photographs of baby Renata, and a mini-cassette recorder.
One envelope was addressed to Celia.
A second to Marcus.
A third to me.
But the most important thing was a handwritten timeline.
Elena had documented the final two weeks before her death.
October 11: CELIA CONFIRMS MARCUS HAS FILE.
October 12: ARTURO THREAT THROUGH LUIS.
October 13: MATEO REFUSES LEDGER.
October 14, 7:30 P.M.: MEET NORA - ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS.
Then one final line.
IF I MISS 10 P.M. CALL, THOMAS PARK RELEASES COPIES.
Detective Park stared at her father's name.
"He had copies."
"Apparently."
"Where?"
She looked shaken.
Then she remembered something.
"My father left me a safe deposit key when he died."
"Did you open it?"
"Once."
"What was inside?"
"Old medals. His service weapon paperwork. A sealed envelope he said belonged to a case and should stay sealed unless someone named Elena contacted me."
I stared at her.
"You still have it?"
Park whispered, "Yes."
Nineteen years after Elena died, her last backup had been sitting in a box belonging to the detective investigating our daughter.
