## CHAPTER 7 ## THE DAUGHTER WHO WAS NEVER HERS

The words on the page refused to make sense.

I read them once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

---

HANNAH CALDWELL IS NOT REBECCA CALDWELL'S BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTER.

---

I stared at the document.

Waiting for the letters to change.

Waiting for someone to tell me it was a mistake.

---

But they didn't.

---

"That's impossible."

The words came out quietly.

---

Jonathan Reeves folded his hands on the desk.

"I understand why you feel that way."

---

"No."

I shook my head.

"You don't understand."

---

Because this wasn't just another secret.

This wasn't another lie about Christmas invitations.

This wasn't about a house.

---

This was my entire childhood.

---

"Hannah was always the favorite."

I whispered.

---

Jonathan looked at me.

"Your grandmother knew."

---

I looked up.

"What?"

---

"She knew before you did."

---

I felt something break inside me.

---

"How long?"

---

"Since Hannah was six months old."

---

I leaned back.

---

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

---

Jonathan looked toward the window.

"Because Eleanor believed the truth would destroy more than it would heal."

---

I almost laughed.

---

"That's exactly what everyone says before they keep secrets."

---

He nodded.

---

"Your grandmother regretted that decision."

---

I looked down at the papers.

---

"Then why leave this for me now?"

---

Jonathan opened another folder.

---

"Because she knew the truth would eventually come out."

---

Inside were medical records.

A DNA report.

Legal documents.

---

I didn't want to read anymore.

But I did.

---

Because I had spent my entire life being the person everyone expected to accept pain quietly.

---

The DNA report confirmed it.

---

Hannah was not my mother's biological child.

---

I closed my eyes.

---

"Who was she?"

---

Jonathan hesitated.

---

"Her biological mother was named Claire Whitmore."

---

My grandmother's last name.

---

My breath stopped.

---

"Whitmore?"

---

"Yes."

---

I stared.

---

"You're saying Hannah was..."

---

"Your grandmother's granddaughter."

---

Silence.

---

The truth was so strange that my brain couldn't process it.

---

Hannah wasn't my mother's daughter.

---

She was Grandma Eleanor's blood.

---

---

I drove back to the beach house in silence.

---

The ocean looked the same.

The waves.

The wind.

The gray winter sky.

---

But everything else was different.

---

When I opened the door...

Everyone was still there.

---

Nobody had left.

---

They were waiting.

---

My mother looked up immediately.

---

"What did Jonathan tell you?"

---

I stopped.

---

The question was too revealing.

---

Not:

"Are you okay?"

Not:

"What did you find?"

---

"What did Jonathan tell you?"

---

She already knew there was something.

---

I looked at Hannah.

---

My sister.

---

The person who had stood beside my mother in every Christmas photo.

---

"Hannah."

---

She looked confused.

"What?"

---

I held the documents.

---

"Do you know who your biological mother is?"

---

The room went silent.

---

Hannah's face changed.

---

Only slightly.

---

But I saw it.

---

Fear.

---

"Layla..."

---

"Answer me."

---

My voice wasn't angry.

It was tired.

---

The kind of tired that comes after years of disappointment.

---

Hannah looked at Rebecca.

---

And that was enough.

---

She knew.

---

"You knew."

I whispered.

---

Hannah looked down.

---

"Not everything."

---

My mother immediately stepped forward.

---

"Don't do this."

---

I looked at her.

---

"Do what?"

---

"Destroy this family."

---

I almost smiled.

---

"Destroy?"

---

I looked around.

---

"The family that spent fifteen years pretending I wasn't part of it?"

---

Nobody spoke.

---

---

Hannah finally sat down.

---

"I found out two years ago."

---

Everyone turned.

---

"You knew?"

Rebecca asked.

---

Hannah nodded.

---

"Grandma told me."

---

My chest tightened.

---

"Grandma told you?"

---

"Yes."

---

"Why?"

---

Hannah looked at me.

---

And for the first time...

She looked ashamed.

---

"Because she wanted me to understand why she loved you so much."

---

I froze.

---

"What?"

---

Hannah wiped her eyes.

---

"She said you were the only person in the family who loved her without wanting something."

---

A painful silence.

---

---

"She also told me something else."

---

I looked at her.

---

"What?"

---

Hannah took a breath.

---

"She said she was sorry."

---

"For what?"

---

"Because she knew I was the reason you were pushed away."

---

I frowned.

---

"How?"

---

Hannah looked toward my mother.

---

"Because Mom always felt guilty."

---

"Guilty about what?"

---

Hannah swallowed.

---

"Because she didn't adopt me out of love."

---

The room became completely still.

---

"She adopted me because she needed to replace you."

---

My heart sank.

---

No one spoke.

---

Not even Rebecca.

---

---

Hannah continued.

---

"When Dad left..."

"Mom couldn't handle losing control."

---

"She couldn't make you love her again."

---

"So she built another family."

---

I looked at Rebecca.

---

My mother looked away.

---

---

"She gave me everything."

Hannah whispered.

---

"But I never understood why she always looked at you with anger."

---

A tear fell down her face.

---

"Until Grandma explained."

---

I asked:

"What did Grandma say?"

---

Hannah looked at me.

---

"She said..."

---

A pause.

---

"‘Rebecca didn't hate Layla because Layla was difficult.’"

---

"‘She hated Layla because Layla was proof of everything Rebecca regretted.’"

---

The room was silent.

---

For years...

I thought I wasn't enough.

---

But the truth was much worse.

---

I was never the problem.

---

I was just the reminder.

---

---

Then Rebecca finally spoke.

---

Her voice was quiet.

---

"Yes."

---

Everyone looked at her.

---

She sat down slowly.

---

"Yes, Hannah is right."

---

I stared.

---

She continued.

---

"I was angry."

---

"Not at Layla."

---

Her eyes met mine.

---

"At myself."

---

For the first time...

She didn't sound like she was defending herself.

---

She sounded broken.

---

"I lost Michael."

---

"I lost Eleanor's trust."

---

"And every time I looked at Layla..."

---

Her voice cracked.

---

"I saw the person I blamed for my own mistakes."

---

Nobody moved.

---

---

Then she said something I never expected.

---

"But there is one thing Eleanor never knew."

---

My body tensed.

---

"What?"

---

Rebecca looked at me.

---

"When she changed the will..."

---

A pause.

---

"Someone had already tried to stop her."

---

My stomach tightened.

---

"Who?"

---

Rebecca looked toward the window.

---

And whispered:

---

"Your uncle."

---

I froze.

---

"I don't have an uncle."

---

My mother looked at me.

---

"Yes."

---

"You do."

---

---

The ocean waves crashed outside.

---

Another secret.

Another hidden person.

Another piece of a family I thought I understood.

---

My grandmother didn't just leave me a house.

---

She left me a path.

---

A path through every lie that had been built around me.

---

And now I had reached the next one.

---

May you like

Because the man who tried to stop Grandma Eleanor's will...

Was someone who shared my blood.
