Chapter 16 - Lily Taken Again

The foster home was secure.
Two officers had been stationed nearby.
Neither saw anyone enter.
The foster mother found Lily’s crib empty after waking from an unexpected deep sleep.
Toxicology later found sedative residue in her tea.
Someone inside the protection network had betrayed us.
Ethan heard the news in a private courthouse room.
He stopped breathing.
Then he stood.
“I’m going to find her.”
I caught his shoulders gently.
“No.”
“That is not your job anymore.”
“She’s my sister.”
“Yes.”
“And you already saved her once.”
His face twisted.
“That doesn’t mean you have to keep saving every adult around you.”
He began crying.
I held him.
This time, he let me.
Torres locked down the protection team.
One officer disappeared before questioning.
His name was Caleb Morris.
He had worked courthouse security for eight years.
His bank account received thirty thousand dollars from a Whitmore shell company two days earlier.
Cameras captured him leaving with a diaper bag.
Not Lily.
Another camera showed a woman carrying a covered infant carrier through the rear gate.
Rachel recognized her.
“Elaine Whitmore.”
Grant’s mother.
She was alive.
Bernard told everyone she died twenty years earlier.
Another false death in a family built on erased identities.
Elaine had been living under another name in New Mexico.
Why take Lily?
Grant’s biological mother believed Lily was the only chance to restore Grant’s inheritance.
She blamed Margaret and Bernard for stealing his childhood.
Now she was repeating the same logic with another child.
Police traced Elaine’s vehicle toward Lake Hollow.
The old conservation property.
The place where the family secrets began.
I insisted on going with Torres.
Rachel stayed with Ethan.
At the lake, officers found Elaine inside an abandoned ranger station.
Lily was alive.
But Elaine held her near the dock with a pistol.
“Stay back.”
Torres lowered her weapon slightly.
“Elaine, put the baby down.”
“She belongs to Grant.”
“She belongs to herself.”
Elaine laughed bitterly.
“You sound like Henry.”
That sentence revealed everything.
Henry had tried to acknowledge Grant.
Elaine had wanted him recognized.
Margaret stopped it.
Bernard adopted Grant and turned the boy into leverage.
Elaine accepted secrecy because Bernard promised Grant would eventually inherit.
The promise became her entire life.
Now she was willing to endanger Lily for the same inheritance.
I stepped forward.
“You want Grant to have a family?”
Elaine looked at me.
“Yes.”
“Then stop teaching his daughter that family means captivity.”
Her hand shook.
“She is all he has.”
“No.”
“She is not something he has.”
“She is a child.”
Lily began crying.
Elaine looked down.
That second was enough.
Torres moved.
An officer grabbed Elaine’s wrist.
The gun fell.
I took Lily.
She screamed until I pressed her against my chest.
Then she quieted.
We recovered her safely.
For the second time.
But when we returned to Phoenix, Ethan was gone.
Rachel stood outside the courthouse room holding a note.
Ethan had left voluntarily.
The note said:
I know how to end this.
