CHAPTER 3: The Truth Hidden on Camera

Detectives spent six hours reviewing the recordings.
The first videos showed Claire wandering the mansion after suffering a serious head injury from a car crash.
She was alive.
Confused.
Unable to remember her own name.
The family doctor had documented temporary memory loss.
Nathaniel had been overseas negotiating a merger when the accident happened.
Vanessa handled everything.
Including the paperwork.
The cameras showed Vanessa firing every employee who recognized Claire.
Replacing them with staff loyal only to her.
Then came the recording that made everyone in the room fall silent.
Claire stood in the library holding a family photograph.
"I know this house," she whispered.
"I've been here before."
Vanessa calmly walked over.
She smiled.
Then she took the photograph away.
"No, Emily."
"You've never lived here."
"You work for me."
Day after day...
Week after week...
Month after month...
The same lies.
The same manipulation.
Whenever Claire questioned her memories, Vanessa reminded her she was "just the maid."
Whenever she became frightened, Vanessa threatened to send the other servants away if Claire refused to obey.
The final recording was only three days old.
Claire quietly asked,
"Do you think my husband is still looking for me?"
Vanessa laughed.
"He remarried."
"He forgot you years ago."
Nathaniel covered his face.
Claire had never stopped waiting.
And he had never stopped searching.
They had both been living inside the same nightmare.
Just in different rooms.
Detective Harris quietly closed the laptop.
"This isn't just abuse."
"It's unlawful imprisonment, fraud, identity theft, and criminal conspiracy."
Nathaniel looked at Vanessa.
She finally seemed afraid.
But the worst discovery had not yet been made.
The detective placed one last folder on the table.

"It appears..."
"...Vanessa didn't act alone."
