Chapter 4 — The Greatest Investment

Six months later...

The burned mansion was still being rebuilt.

But another building opened that morning.

The Marisol Vega Family Center.

A place for single parents.

Free childcare.

Job training.

Emergency housing.

Scholarships.

Medical assistance.

Reporters asked Preston why he'd funded the entire project.

He smiled.

"Because the richest person at my gala..."

"...was the woman who arrived with holes in her shoes."

The crowd applauded.

Then Preston stepped aside.

"This center isn't named after a billionaire."

"It's named after courage."

Marisol walked to the microphone.

She looked out at hundreds of families.

Then at Sofia sitting in the front row.

"My daughter once asked me why I worked so hard."

She smiled.

"I told her something."

"Real wealth isn't measured by what you own."

"It's measured by who feels safe because you exist."

Sofia ran onto the stage and hugged her mother.

The audience stood.

Not because Marisol had saved a billionaire's son.

But because she reminded everyone that night...

That heroism doesn't wear designer clothes.

It doesn't arrive in limousines.

Sometimes...

It washes dishes all evening.
