CHAPTER 3 — THE DEBT SHE NEVER KNEW SHE WAS OWED
The smile disappeared from Dominic's face.
"Where?"
"The underground garage."
Security tightened around Margaret immediately.
Guests sensed something was wrong.
The room grew quiet again.
Dominic looked at Grace.
"I need to ask you something."
She nodded.
"Okay."
"Were you followed here tonight?"
She frowned.
"I don't think so."
He studied her for a moment.
Then turned to Mr. Russo.
"Bring him."
Five minutes later...
Two guards escorted a frightened man into the ballroom.
Grace's eyes widened.
"Ben?"
He was one of the kitchen porters.
He couldn't stop shaking.
"I didn't do anything."
Dominic placed a photograph on the table.
Ben stared at it.
His face turned white.
It showed him opening a service entrance door...
Thirty minutes before the gala.
"Someone paid me."
He whispered.
"They said they just needed directions."
Dominic nodded.
"Who?"
Ben slowly pointed.
Not at Grace.
Not at Margaret.
At Vivian Whitmore.
The ballroom erupted.
Vivian laughed in disbelief.
"That's absurd."
Ben broke down crying.
"She gave me ten thousand dollars."
"She said no one would get hurt."
Margaret quietly closed her eyes.
"So..."
"You planned another attack."
Vivian screamed,
"Prove it!"
Dominic calmly handed his phone to the hotel owner.
"Play the recording."
The owner pressed one button.
Vivian's voice filled the ballroom.
"Keep the old woman distracted."
"The rest will happen downstairs."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Police officers entered moments later.
Vivian looked around desperately.
Nobody moved to help her.
As officers placed handcuffs on her wrists...
She glared at Grace.
"This is your fault."
Grace quietly shook her head.
"No."
"You did that all by yourself."
Later that night...
Dominic walked Grace to the hotel entrance.
"You saved my mother's life."
Grace smiled.
"I just stopped a slap."
He looked toward the flashing police lights.
"No."
"You stopped something much bigger."
He handed her an envelope.
Inside...
An employment contract.
Director of the DeLuca Family Foundation.
Salary:
$500,000 per year.
Grace stared at it.
"I've never run a foundation."
Dominic smiled.
"I know."
"But anyone willing to risk everything for a stranger..."
"...is exactly the person I want protecting the people we help."
Grace looked back at Margaret.
The elderly woman reached out her hand.
"Come visit me tomorrow."
"I'd like to thank my new guardian angel."
Grace laughed.
"I'd like that."

SUMMARY

Impressed by her courage, Dominic offers her a new career, but the night takes another shocking turn when evidence reveals the confrontation was meant to distract security from a planned attack on his mother. A hotel employee confesses he was bribed, a recording exposes the mastermind, and police arrest Vivian Whitmore. Grace's act of simple kindness ultimately changes her life forever.
