The ballroom inside the Whitmore mansion sparkled with crystal chandeliers and expensive smiles.

Billionaires laughed.

Politicians shook hands.

Champagne flowed like water.

At the center of it all stood Daniel Whitmore.

Forty-two years old.

Billionaire.

Powerful.

Untouchable.

At least that's what everyone believed.

Then a small voice broke through the crowd.

"Daddy."

The room slowly turned.

Six-year-old Sophie Whitmore stood near the grand staircase.

Her stuffed bunny hung from one arm.

Her eyes were red.

Like she'd been crying.

Daniel forced a smile.

"Hey, sweetheart. Come say hello to everyone."

But Sophie didn't move.

Instead, she pointed toward the back of the room.

Toward a young maid standing quietly beside the wall.

Anna Brooks.

Twenty-four years old.

Almost invisible to everyone there.

Except Sophie.

The little girl walked straight across the ballroom.

Then grabbed Anna's hand.

The room fell silent.

"Daddy," Sophie said.

Her voice was shaking.

"She's the one who stayed with me."

Daniel's smile faded.

"What do you mean?"

Sophie looked up at him.

"When I cried for Mommy."

Silence.

A painful silence.

The guests exchanged nervous glances.

Sophie's mother had died two years earlier.

Nobody talked about it.

Especially not Daniel.

The little girl continued.

"When I had nightmares, Anna sat outside my room."

Anna looked horrified.

"Sophie..."

"When I was scared, she read stories to me."

Tears appeared in Sophie's eyes.

"And when I wanted to talk..."

She looked directly at her father.

"She listened."

Daniel suddenly couldn't breathe.

The room felt smaller.

The women standing beside him slowly stepped away.

Nobody wanted to be part of this.

"Daddy..."

Sophie's voice cracked.

"Can Anna stay?"

Anna lowered her head immediately.

"Mr. Whitmore, I'm sorry. I never meant—"

"Stay?" Daniel asked.

His voice was strangely quiet.

Sophie nodded.

"They said you're sending her away tomorrow."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

The little girl started crying.

"They said she doesn't belong here anymore."

For the first time all night, Daniel looked genuinely shocked.

Because he had never heard anything about Anna being fired.

Not once.

Slowly, he turned toward his head housekeeper.

The older woman's face went pale.
