CHAPTER 2: THE MAN SHE NEVER KNEW
CHAPTER 2: THE MAN SHE NEVER KNEW
Nobody in the restaurant could stop staring.
Claire felt her stomach twisting.
"What is he talking about?"
Ethan sighed.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Just tired.
The pilot remained silent.
Waiting.
Finally Ethan looked at Claire.
"You really want to know?"
"Yes."
His eyes held hers.
"My full name is Ethan Kingsley."
The name meant nothing to most people.
Then someone near the bar gasped.
"No way."
Another customer pulled out his phone.
Within seconds his face went white.
"Oh my God."
Claire grabbed the phone.
Her hands shook.
The article showed a photo.
A younger version of Ethan.
Standing beside several world leaders.
The headline read:
KINGSLEY GLOBAL FOUNDER RETURNS AFTER TWO-YEAR ABSENCE
Claire nearly dropped the phone.
Kingsley Global.
One of the largest logistics and transportation companies in the world.
Private ports.
Cargo fleets.
Airlines.
Billions in assets.
The company was worth more money than she could even imagine.
She looked at Ethan.
"No."
He didn't answer.
Because it was true.
The pilot quietly spoke.
"The board has been trying to reach you for six hours, sir."
Claire stared.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Ethan laughed softly.
A sad laugh.
"Because I wanted someone to love me."
The words hurt more than any insult.
"I did love you."
"Did you?"
His voice wasn't angry.
That somehow made it worse.
"When you thought I made sixty thousand a year?"
Claire couldn't answer.
Because she knew.
Deep down.
She knew.
Ethan had spent two years living outside the billionaire world.
No private jets.
No luxury mansions.
No bodyguards.
He wanted a normal life.
A normal relationship.
A normal future.
And now it was gone.
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"Ethan..."
But Ethan stepped back.
For the first time in three years.
There was distance between them.
Real distance.
The pilot checked his watch.
"We need to leave, sir."
Ethan nodded.
Then looked at Claire one final time.
The woman he had planned to marry.
The woman who had laughed at him.
In front of everyone.
"I hope you find what you're looking for."
Then he turned.
And walked toward the exit.
Claire suddenly panicked.
"Ethan, wait!"
He stopped.
For one second.
Hope filled her chest.
Then Ethan spoke without turning around.
"The funny thing is..."
His voice was calm.
"I was never poor."
A pause.
"But tonight, I found out who really is."
Then he walked away.
Leaving Claire standing alone in the center of the restaurant.
Surrounded by silence.
And regret.
