CHAPTER 3 — THE WOMAN WHO LOVED AN INHERITANCE
The hidden camera footage filled the screen.
The ballroom listened in silence.
"I'll inherit everything soon."
Then...
"He's too weak to notice anything."
Another clip played.
Evelyn laughing with my cousin.
"The wheelchair saved me months of pretending."
A wave of disgust swept through the room.
She turned toward the technicians.
"Turn it off!"
Nobody moved.
My father stood.
"No."
"You've spoken long enough."
"It's my son's turn."
Evelyn looked at me desperately.
"Lucas..."
"I didn't mean it."
"You kissed me for the cameras."
I answered calmly.
"You insulted me when they weren't looking."
She reached for my hand.
I stepped back.
"The engagement is over."
The room erupted.
One board member quietly stood.
"I withdraw my support from Miss Hart."
Another followed.
"So do I."
Within seconds...
Every major investor had distanced themselves.
Evelyn looked around in panic.
"You can't do this!"
"I loved you!"
I smiled sadly.
"No."
"You loved the version of me you thought couldn't get up."
Silence.
Then I looked toward the back of the ballroom.
"Linh."
The young maid froze.
"Sir?"
"Would you come here?"
She walked forward nervously.
"I... did something wrong?"
I shook my head.
"When everyone else saw weakness..."
"You saw a person."
She lowered her eyes.
"My mother taught me..."
"...kindness costs nothing."
I smiled.
"She was right."
I turned toward the staff manager.
"Effective today..."
"Linh is no longer part of housekeeping."
The manager looked confused.
"She'll be joining the Lancaster Foundation on a full scholarship."
The young maid's eyes filled with tears.
"What?"
"You've been studying at night to become a nurse."
She stared at me.
"You knew?"
"I make it my business to know the dreams of people who work for me."
She covered her mouth.
"I don't know what to say."
"Say yes."
She nodded through tears.
"Yes."
Months later...
Evelyn disappeared from New York society.
The board elected stronger ethics policies for every executive.
Linh graduated at the top of her nursing program.
On the day she received her diploma...
She found a handwritten note waiting in a bouquet of white lilies.
Never let anyone convince you that kindness is weakness.
She smiled.
May you like
Because she knew exactly who had sent it.
SUMMARY
Believing Lucas Lancaster will never walk again after a serious accident, his fiancée Evelyn publicly humiliates him while secretly celebrating the fortune she expects to inherit. Unknown to her, Lucas has already recovered and has spent weeks pretending to remain disabled while hidden cameras record everyone's true behavior. At the annual shareholders' meeting, he shocks the entire ballroom by standing up and walking across the stage before exposing Evelyn's cruel comments on a giant screen. He ends their engagement, strips away her influence, and rewards the only person who treated him with genuine compassion—the mansion's new maid, Linh—by helping her pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.
