Chapter 6 - The Twenty-Year Ledger

Daniel Cross reconstructed twenty years of Lucy's finances.

He called it the most arrogant fraud he had ever seen.

Lucy did not hide everything.

She disguised it as legitimacy.

Consulting fees.

Event expenses.

Private security.

Medical advocacy.

Family restructuring.

Every ugly act had a respectable label.

E.C. RESOLUTION was one of them.

So was ANA STABILIZATION.

My name appeared in payments beginning when I was sixteen.

A private investigator.

A therapist I never chose.

A boarding school consultant.

A security firm.

Lucy had paid people to build a file about me.

Behavioral incidents.

Emotional volatility.

Family conflict.

Most reports were exaggerated.

Some were completely false.

One claimed I threatened Lucy with a knife.

I had never touched a knife near her.

Another claimed I stole jewelry.

That incident had been the reason my father sent me away for six months.

I remembered begging him to search my room with me.

He refused.

Lucy later "found" the necklace in my suitcase.

Now we found a receipt showing she bought an identical necklace two days before accusing me.

Sixth slap.

Evidence.

I stopped thinking of the title as a literal promise.

Twenty slaps had become twenty moments when Lucy's constructed world cracked.

Each one hurt because it could not be undone with makeup or PR.

Number seven came from my old boarding school.

Their archive contained a letter from Lucy.

Please document any incidents suggesting instability.

No incidents had occurred.

So Lucy complained the reports were not useful.

Number eight came from my aunt Susan.

She called me after the gala.

"I owe you an apology."

"For what?"

"For believing her."

Susan admitted Lucy had shown relatives fabricated emails supposedly written by me.

In them, I called the family stupid.

Greedy.

Disposable.

I never wrote them.

Susan still had printed copies.

The metadata led to Lucy's former assistant.

That assistant was now willing to talk.

Her name was Camila Reyes.

She had worked for Lucy for eleven years.

She told Rachel that Lucy kept a private file called THE STORY.

Inside were talking points for every family crisis.

ELENA — unstable.

ANA — jealous.

JONATHAN — grieving widower.

LUCY — caretaker.

The family narrative had literally been managed like a political campaign.

Camila also remembered E.C. RESOLUTION.

"What was it?"

I asked.

She hesitated.

"A payment to a man named Victor Hale."

"Who?"

"Private security."

Rachel searched.

Victor Hale had died five years earlier.

But his company records survived.

One invoice was dated the night my mother died.

Service description.

RESIDENTIAL ACCESS / CLEANUP.

My body turned cold.

"What cleanup?"

Camila looked frightened.

"I don't know."

Then she added.

"But Lucy called me the next morning."

"What did she say?"

Camila closed her eyes.

May you like

"She said Elena had finally stopped being a problem."
