Chapter 12 - THE VOICEMAIL

Dad’s voice was weak.
“Em.”
One syllable.
I broke.
Daniel sat on the floor across from me.
Not touching.
Just there.
Dad continued.
“I’m sorry I didn’t protect you from this house.”
A breath.
“I kept thinking I could fix one more thing before telling you.”
Another breath.
“Don’t become me.”
I covered my mouth.
“Don’t wait for perfect proof before leaving people who make you afraid.”
Then.
“I love you.”
The voicemail ended.
I listened once.
Only once.
That was enough.
Federal prosecutors moved that afternoon.
Ambrose was arrested on kidnapping conspiracy, fraud, witness tampering, and charges tied to Dad’s medication.
Victoria was arrested two hours later.
She did not cry.
She shouted my name across the hotel lobby.
“Emily!”
I kept walking.
“You ungrateful little bitch!”
Cameras caught it.
Her lawyer nearly died on the spot.
Then she screamed.
“Your father would hate you!”
I stopped.
Turned.
“No.”
My voice shook.
“He left a message.”
Victoria’s face went blank.
For the first time, I saw real fear.
Not fear of prison.
Fear that Dad had spoken after she thought she had silenced him.
She lunged toward me.
Federal agents caught her.
“What did he say?”
I walked away.
That felt better than answering.
Then Carter-Lane’s board voted.
Without Victoria, control temporarily passed to the trust administrator.
Me.
At twenty-four.
I had never run a manufacturing company.
My first board meeting was a disaster.
One director called me a child.
Another suggested Daniel was controlling me.
A third asked whether I was “emotionally ready.”
I stared at him.
“My stepmother tried to trade me to a lender.”
Silence.
“I climbed out a bathroom window in a thunderstorm.”
More silence.
“I’m here.”
I leaned forward.
“So if you have a business question, ask it.”
Nobody did.
Then the CFO cleared his throat.
“We’re missing forty-six million dollars.”
May you like
Of course we were.
