PART 2 — THE LETTER HER FATHER BURIED FOR TWENTY YEARS
Celeste looked at her father.
Then at the envelope.
Then back at the little girl.
For the first time in years...
The cameras caught fear instead of confidence.
Her father smiled for the reporters.
"Sweetheart."
"Come inside."
"We're keeping everyone waiting."
Celeste didn't move.
"Why shouldn't I open it?"
His smile tightened.
"Because it's a cruel prank."
The little girl quietly shook her head.
"My mommy said..."
"...he'd call it a lie."
"...before anyone even read it."
The crowd exchanged uneasy glances.
A reporter took one step closer.
"Mr. Vale..."
"Would you like to comment?"
His eyes never left the envelope.
"Security."
"Remove the child."
Two guards stepped forward.
Celeste suddenly raised her hand.
"No."
The guards froze.
"Nobody touches her."
A murmur spread through the crowd.
She broke the red wax seal.
Inside...
One folded letter.
One faded photograph.
And a tiny hospital bracelet.
Celeste unfolded the letter first.
The handwriting stole the breath from her lungs.
Vivienne.
She hadn't seen those looping letters in twenty years.
The first line made her knees weak.
Celeste... if you're reading this, Father finally lost control of the story.
A gasp swept through the reporters.
She continued.
I never abandoned you.
I never abandoned our family.
I was forced to disappear.
Her father stepped forward.
"That's enough."
She ignored him.
The night I left...
I wasn't running away.
I was running from him.
Silence crashed over Fifth Avenue.
Camera flashes exploded.
Her father reached for the letter.
The little girl spoke softly.
"My mommy said..."
"...if Grandpa tried to stop you..."
"...it meant every word was true."
Arthur stopped moving.
Because once again...
Vivienne had predicted him perfectly.
Then Celeste picked up the hospital bracelet.
The engraving read...
BABY EVA VALE.
Her hands began to shake.
She looked at the little girl.
"Is..."
"...that your name?"
The little girl nodded.
"My mommy called me Eva."
Arthur closed his eyes.
Because that name...
May you like
Had never appeared on a single official family record.
