CHAPTER 2: THE THING SHE MISUNDERSTOOD

Sophie searched through his phone.

Messages to another woman.

Plans.

Meetings.

Anger burned.

But then she saw context.

The woman was his business partner.

Their company was collapsing.

Debts.

Legal threats.

He had been meeting her to save Sophie’s family home, which was tied to the business.

Sophie froze.

“No… he was doing this for me?”

But she also saw something else.

He never told her.

Because he didn’t want her to carry fear.

Michael found her at her childhood home.

“I didn’t cheat.”

Sophie cried.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Michael answered softly.

“Because I wanted you to feel safe.”

A pause.

“I forgot that silence feels like betrayal too.”

Sophie whispered:

“So I ruined everything?”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

“We both did.”
