PART 2 – The Company Was Never the Prize

The red warning lights kept flashing.

ACCESS DENIED.

EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN ACTIVATED.

Bryce spun toward the steel doors.

He grabbed the handle.

Nothing.

He slammed his shoulder into it.

Nothing.

"What did you do?"

I slowly pushed myself against the server rack.

Another contraction hit.

Hard.

I almost fell.

Martha smiled.

"You think locking a door changes anything?"

She held up the transfer tablet.

"You still have to sign."

I smiled through the pain.

"No."

She frowned.

"What?"

I looked at the screens lining the server room.

"My father designed this room."

"Not to keep people out."

"To keep thieves in."

The lights flickered.

A calm computerized voice echoed through the room.

Emergency lockdown confirmed.

Executive Security has been notified.

Bryce laughed.

"So what?"

"We'll tell them you're unstable."

"You're eight months pregnant."

"No one will believe you."

I reached beneath the keyboard.

Pressed my thumb against a hidden scanner.

ACCESS VERIFIED.

A second monitor lit up.

Dozens of security camera feeds appeared.

The server room.

The hallway.

The elevator.

Every angle.

Bryce's face changed.

"They've been recording?"

"For twelve years."

Martha stepped toward me.

"Turn it off."

"You don't want anyone seeing this."

"I do."

I clicked one more button.

Every monitor inside company headquarters switched on.

Reception.

Conference rooms.

Executive offices.

Employee lounges.

The live feed appeared everywhere.

Hundreds of employees suddenly watched the server room.

Watched Martha corner a pregnant woman.

Watched Bryce shove me.

Watched blood running down my arm.

Silence.

Then another contraction bent me forward.

Bryce panicked.

"Mom..."

"I think she's really bleeding."

Martha hissed,

"Shut up."

Before anyone could speak again...

The intercom crackled.

"Executive Security."

"We're outside the server room."

"Step away from Ms. Whitcomb."

Martha smiled.

"They work for me."

A second voice interrupted.

"No..."

"They work for the legal owner."

The steel door began unlocking.

And someone on the other side...

May you like

Already knew exactly what had happened.

END OF PART 2.
