Chapter 2: The House That Never Belonged To Them

The envelope contained only one sentence.

"Do NOT leave the property until my attorney arrives."

Signed.

My husband.

Thomas Brooks.

The sheriff looked toward the house.

"Ma'am..."

"What?"

"I suggest we wait."

Twenty minutes later, three black SUVs entered the neighborhood.

A woman in a navy suit stepped out.

Behind her came two deputies.

A locksmith.

And a judge.

The entire neighborhood gathered outside.

My son opened the front door.

Annoyed.

"What's going on?"

The attorney introduced herself.

"My name is Rebecca Lang."

She looked directly at my son.

"Who are you?"

Michael frowned.

"I'm the homeowner."

Rebecca smiled politely.

"No."

Silence.

"You are not."

Samantha laughed.

"This house belongs to my husband."

Rebecca opened a thick folder.

"No."

She looked at me.

"It belongs to Mrs. Eleanor Brooks."

The entire street fell silent.

Michael turned pale.

"What?"

Rebecca continued.

"Your father transferred the deed into your mother's name eighteen years ago."

I couldn't breathe.

Eighteen years?

Thomas never told me.

Samantha grabbed the paperwork.

"This is fake."

Rebecca calmly handed another document to the judge.

Certified county records.

Original signatures.

Official seal.

Real.

Very real.

Then Rebecca smiled again.

"And there's more."

She handed me another envelope.

Thomas's handwriting.

My dearest Ellie,

I know our son.

I know how easily people can be manipulated.

If you're reading this, he chose someone over family.

That breaks my heart.

But I promised I'd always protect you.

The house has been yours for years.

The bank accounts are yours.

The rental properties are yours.

Everything we built together...

Was always yours.

My tears blurred the page.

Michael looked sick.

But Rebecca wasn't finished.

She turned toward Samantha.

"You forged several ownership documents."

The smile disappeared from Samantha's face.

Rebecca looked at the sheriff.

"Please proceed."

The sheriff nodded.

"Mrs. Samantha Brooks..."

He pulled out handcuffs.

"...you're under arrest."

Chaos exploded.

Samantha screamed.

Michael shouted.

Neighbors recorded everything.

I stood frozen.

Then Samantha looked directly at Michael.

And yelled:

"Tell them the truth!"

The world went silent.

Michael closed his eyes.

May you like

And whispered:

"The house wasn't why we did it."
