CHAPTER 7: The Voice That Made Derek Drop His Gun

"Kill her in front of Lily."
The words crackled through the gunman's radio.
Lily screamed.
I pulled her behind a stack of rusted steel drums just as the first man raised his rifle.
"Move!" I shouted.
The gunman fired.
BANG!
The bullet shattered the concrete pillar inches from my head.
Dust exploded into the air.
Noah grabbed Helen's hand and crawled toward an overturned forklift.
Another shot rang out.
The warehouse echoed with deafening blasts.
They weren't trying to scare us anymore.
They had orders.
The gunman advanced slowly.
"Come out, Rachel."
His voice was almost cheerful.
"It'll be over quickly."
I grabbed the only thing within reach—a heavy steel wrench lying beside the forklift.
Not much.
But better than nothing.
Lily clung to my shirt.
"Mommy..."
"I know."
"I'm scared."
"So am I."
I forced a smile.
"But we're getting out together."
Outside, tires screeched across the gravel.
Another black SUV pulled up.
The rear door opened.
Derek stepped out.
He looked exactly as he had that morning.
Clean suit.
Perfect hair.
Calm expression.
The only difference...
He wasn't pretending anymore.
He walked into the warehouse without hurrying, as though he already owned the ending.
His eyes landed on me.
"There you are."
His voice was smooth.
"I've been worried."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"Worried?"
He smiled.
"You disappeared."
"You tried to murder us."
He sighed as though I were being unreasonable.
"Rachel..."
"You were never supposed to find out."
Lily peeked around my shoulder.
"Daddy..."
For just a second, Derek's face softened.
He crouched down.
"Come here, sweetheart."
Lily didn't move.
"You always told me monsters aren't real."
Her tiny voice trembled.
"Were you lying then..."
"...or are you lying now?"
Something flickered across Derek's face.
Not guilt.
Annoyance.
He stood again.
"Lily."
"Come here."
She stepped behind me instead.
"I'm staying with Mommy."
Derek's expression hardened.
"I don't have time for this."
He nodded toward the armed men.
"Take Rachel."
One of them stepped forward.
I tightened my grip on the wrench.
"If anyone touches my daughter..."
The man laughed.
"What are you going to do?"
I didn't answer.
Because I didn't know.
Then Noah suddenly shouted from across the warehouse.
"Rachel!"
He held Derek's hidden phone above his head.
"I copied everything!"
Every gun in the room swung toward him.
Derek's calm mask cracked for the first time.
"No!"
He lunged forward.
"Delete it!"
Too late.
Noah pressed one button.
The phone chimed.
Upload Complete.
Derek froze.
"What did you do?"
Noah swallowed hard.
"My dad taught me."
He held up the screen.
"It uploaded every file."
"Where?" Derek roared.
Noah smiled through his fear.
"I don't know."
"I set it to automatic."
For the first time that day...
I saw real panic in Derek's eyes.
The evidence wasn't just on the phone anymore.
It was somewhere else.
Somewhere he couldn't reach.
His radio suddenly came alive.
"Boss!"
Static crackled.
"We have a problem."
"What?"
"The courthouse."
Derek's face tightened.
"What about it?"
"The judge moved the hearing."
"When?"
Silence.
Then—
"She already has the evidence."
Every man in the warehouse stopped moving.
The Director's voice suddenly came over Derek's encrypted radio.
"Derek."
He answered immediately.
"Yes, sir."
"If Judge Carter has the files..."
A pause.
"...you've become a liability."
Derek frowned.
"What?"
The Director spoke only six words.
"Clean up your own mess."
The transmission ended.
Derek slowly lowered the radio.
His own men looked at him differently now.
One exchanged a glance with another.
A third quietly took a step backward.
They all understood the same thing.
The organization had just abandoned Derek.
If he was captured...
He knew too much.
Suddenly...
A single gunshot echoed outside.
BANG!
One of Derek's bodyguards collapsed beside the warehouse entrance.
Everyone spun toward the doorway.
Another shot.
A second gunman fell.
Then a calm voice echoed across the warehouse.
"Federal agents!"
"Drop your weapons!"
Chaos erupted.
Men scattered in every direction.
Derek grabbed Lily.
"No!"
He wrapped one arm around her and pressed a pistol against her tiny shoulder.
"Everybody stop!"
The warehouse fell silent.
My heart stopped beating.
Lily was crying so hard she could barely stand.
"Mommy..."
I took one careful step forward.
"Derek..."
"Don't."
His hand tightened on the gun.
"You come any closer..."
His voice cracked with desperation.
"...and nobody leaves here."
Then another voice came from the warehouse entrance.
Firm.
Commanding.
Impossible to ignore.
"Derek Collins."
A tall woman in a navy suit stepped inside, surrounded by heavily armed federal agents.
Silver badge.
Bulletproof vest.
Calm eyes.
She looked directly at Derek.
"My name is Amelia Carter."
My breath caught.
The judge.
Judge Amelia Carter.
She calmly reached into her jacket and held up a sealed evidence envelope.
"I've already seen every file."
A long pause.
"And your Director was arrested twenty-three minutes ago."
Derek's face drained of color.
Everything he had killed for...
Everything he had destroyed...
Everything he had sacrificed his own family to protect...
Had already fallen apart.
But with Lily still in his arms and a gun pressed against her...
May you like
The most dangerous moment was only beginning.
