Chapter 5 - She Went After My Husband

I stared at the screenshot until the words blurred.

Lauren wasn't apologizing.

She was threatening my husband's career because he'd defended our daughter.

I called her immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

"Ready to be reasonable?"

"You're threatening to make a false complaint against James?"

"False?"

Her laugh was sharp.

"He stood over me and ordered me out of my parents' house."

"After you hit Emma."

"He used his military voice to intimidate me."

"His military voice?"

"You know exactly what I mean."

I could hear television noise behind her.

She sounded completely comfortable.

As though this were another ordinary family disagreement she expected to win.

"Lauren, James never threatened to hurt you."

"He threatened to call the police."

"Because you struck our daughter."

"God, Sarah. You're impossible."

Then she delivered her ultimatum.

"Have him apologize. Tell the police it was a misunderstanding. Then I'll forget the whole thing."

I felt an ugly, familiar temptation.

End the argument.

Say whatever Lauren wanted.

Make Christmas normal again.

That was what I'd always done.

But then Emma cried from her nursery.

A small, ordinary cry.

The sound of a baby waking from a nap.

I remembered Lauren raising her hand.

"No."

Lauren went silent.

"What?"

"No apology. No changing our statement. And no access to Emma."

"You'll regret this."

She hung up.

James was in the kitchen when I told him.

He read the screenshot carefully.

"Save it," he said.

"Can she get you in trouble?"

"Anybody can make a complaint. It doesn't mean they'll automatically believe it."

"But your command could investigate."

"Sure. They can ask questions."

He set down the phone.

"I'll answer them truthfully."

I wanted him to sound angrier.

Somehow, his calmness made me feel more frightened.

"What if people think you threatened her?"

"Then they'll hear what happened."

He pulled out a chair.

"Sarah, I don't want you thinking my job is a reason to protect Lauren."

I sat opposite him.

"She's going to twist everything."

"Maybe."

"How can you be so calm?"

James looked toward the nursery.

"Because losing my temper would give her something else to use. And I won't let her turn what she did to Emma into a story about me."

I leaned forward and covered my face.

"I hate this."

"I know."

"I'm scared."

"I know."

He reached across the table.

"Me too."

That surprised me.

James wasn't a man who pretended fear didn't exist, but he rarely spoke about it so plainly.

"What scares you?"

He looked down at his wedding ring.

"That I spent seven months missing our daughter, and now people who are supposed to love her are treating her safety like a bargaining chip."

Tears filled my eyes.

"I'm so sorry."

"For what?"

"For my family."

He squeezed my hand.

"They're not your decisions."

Later that evening, my mother called again.

I didn't answer.

She left a voicemail.

"Sarah, Lauren is devastated. You have no idea what she's going through. She has barely slept. She's worried about her reputation. Please, sweetheart, don't make this worse."

I listened twice.

Not once did Mom ask how Emma was doing.

I forwarded the voicemail to James.

Then I opened my family group chat.

There were twenty-six new messages.

My aunt wanted everyone to calm down.

One cousin said families should forgive each other.

Another relative wrote that Lauren had always had a strong personality.

Uncle Peter had finally replied.

I was there. Lauren slapped that baby. Stop calling it a misunderstanding.

For a moment, I felt less alone.

Then another message appeared.

From Lauren.

Everybody deserves to know what Captain Walker did to me.
