Chapter 14 - The Charge Nobody Told Me About

Lauren had not just hurt Caleb.

She had a history before Caleb.

Before Ryan.

Before any of us understood how far Mom would go to protect her.

Ten years earlier, Lauren had been arrested after a fight outside a casino.

A woman suffered a broken nose and a fractured wrist.

Lauren claimed self-defense.

The surveillance footage apparently said otherwise.

Mom borrowed forty thousand dollars from Grandma.

Mark used connections through one of his development attorneys to negotiate restitution and a reduced charge.

Then he kept the paperwork.

Not because he loved Lauren.

Because he loved leverage.

“He’s been holding it over me ever since,” Mom whispered.

I stared at her.

“You lied to protect Lauren because Mark could expose that you lied to protect Lauren.”

Mom flinched.

When spoken aloud, family dysfunction often sounds ridiculous.

That does not make it less destructive.

James asked, “What exactly did Mark threaten to expose?”

“I signed a statement saying the money came from my personal savings. It didn’t. Your grandmother gave it to me from an account Mark claimed had tax restrictions.”

Maya, who was listening by phone, interrupted.

“That may be messy. It is not automatically criminal. He may have exaggerated your exposure to control you.”

Mom stared at the speaker.

“What?”

“People who use blackmail rarely give accurate legal advice.”

For a moment, Mom looked almost angry.

Not at herself.

At Mark.

That mattered.

Maybe not morally.

But strategically.

Maya asked her to come to the office Monday with every document, message, email, and account statement she had.

Mom agreed.

Then she looked at me.

“Can you forgive me?”

I held Emma closer.

“No.”

Her face broke.

I continued.

“Maybe someday I can forgive parts of this. I don’t know. But forgiveness is not the same as access. You lied about my husband to police. You helped plan a situation meant to frighten me. You protected Lauren after she hurt Caleb. You let her near Emma knowing what she was capable of.”

Mom covered her mouth.

“You’re not seeing Emma without me present.”

“Claire—”

“That’s not punishment. That’s a boundary.”

James looked at me.

Proud.

Quietly proud.

Mom stood.

At the door, she turned back.

“There’s something else you need to know about Mark.”

I almost laughed.

There was always something else.

“He’s not trying to save the lake project anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“The developer backed out last month.”

James frowned.

“Then why push the refinance now?”

Mom’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because Mark already took money from them.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then what do you know?”

She gripped the door handle.

“He promised them clear title by December first.”

I looked at the calendar on the wall.

It was November twenty-ninth.

Two days.

James whispered, “That’s why everything happened at Thanksgiving.”

Mom nodded.

“He wasn’t trying to win eventually.”

She looked at me.

“He was running out of time.”
