Chapter 17 - The First Candy Bar

Brent looked at the candy in his hand like Grandma had given him a live animal.

The little fairy waited.

Finally, he dropped one chocolate bar into her bucket.

"Thank you!"

She ran away.

That was it.

No applause.

No swelling music.

Just one kid getting candy from the grumpiest man on the block.

Then another child came over.

And another.

For twenty minutes, Brent stood at the edge of Grandma's yard handing out candy from her bowl.

He barely spoke.

Melissa stayed on the other side of the porch.

They didn't look at each other.

Grandma didn't force anything.

At 9:05, when the crowd thinned, Brent set the bowl down.

"June."

She looked at him.

He shoved his hands into his pockets.

"I was wrong."

The words seemed physically painful.

Grandma waited.

"About the decorations. About the yard. About thinking I had some right to tell you what your house should look like."

He glanced at the wooden pumpkin.

"And that."

Grandma's expression stayed still.

"You broke something you couldn't replace."

"I know."

"You made Melissa part of it."

His eyes flicked toward her.

"I know."

"And when you got caught, you tried to scare me into shutting up."

He nodded once.

Grandma looked at him for a long time.

"I accept that you said it."

Brent frowned.

"That's it?"

"That's what you get tonight."

It wasn't forgiveness.

It wasn't punishment either.

It was honest.

Brent nodded.

Then he walked home.

Ten minutes later, Grandma noticed the candy bowl was almost empty.

"That man gave out full-size bars like he was laundering guilt."

I laughed so hard I snorted.

Grandma stared at me.

"Don't make that sound again."

At 10:30, we turned off the porch lights.

Grandma carried Grandpa's pumpkin inside.

Before closing the door, she looked down the street.

Every house still had some kind of decoration glowing.

Even Brent's.

One small plastic pumpkin sat beside his front door.

And Grandma smiled.

But the story wasn't quite over.

The next morning, a letter was waiting in her mailbox.

May you like
